Thereโs something truly special about leaving the safari vehicle behind and exploring the wilderness on foot at our Kariega Big Five Game Reserve Volunteer Programme, South Africa. A bush walk slows the pace and opens your senses to the finer details often missed from afar. ๐
Walking through nature allows you to reconnect with the quieter side of safari life. Without the hum of an engine, every sound becomes more vivid and every moment more immersive. Itโs a chance to pause, breathe deeply, and appreciate the smaller wonders that make the African bush so magical.โจ๏ธ
From fascinating insects and colourful birds to ancient trees and hidden animal signs, a bush walk reveals an entirely different perspective of the wilderness. Itโs not only an adventure, but also a deeply relaxing experience that leaves you feeling refreshed and grounded in nature. This is also a perfect chance for those on our special family project to have their children engaged with the strange, creepy crawlies of Africa!๐ฟ๐ฆ

โผ๏ธ Last-minute dates just opened up for June & early July - Deep Ecology & Sea Turtle Family Project, Costa Ricaโผ๏ธ
Based on an agroecological farm community in Drake Bay on the southern Pacific Osa Peninsula - one of the most biodiverse places on earth - this is less a holiday, more a full reset. Your family stays in your own private jungle bungalow or cabin with hot showers, hammocks on the decking and primary forest on your doorstep.
June is before turtle season, but there's no shortage of things to get stuck into - organic food growing and regenerative farming, ecological construction, free yoga, free Spanish classes, natural cosmetics making, and exploring the wild coastline, waterfalls and mangroves of the Osa Peninsula. Corcovado National Park is right there for hiking, and humpback whales, dolphins and rays are regular sightings offshore.
Sea turtle conservation begins in July - but June families get all of this, in one of the most extraordinary corners of Central America, for a week or more.
Rated 5/5 from family reviews. Minimum age 8.

Meerkat Mayhem ๐พ
Meerkats are irresistibly cute, highly social, and full of personalityโbut they are not pets. In the wild, they thrive in close-knit groups and fiercely defend their territory. In a home environment, that same instinct can lead to stress and aggression.
Thatโs why sanctuaries have welcomed meerkats over the yearsโsome once kept as pets, others rescued from unsafe situations. At our Wildlife Conservation & San Bushmen Community Project, Namibia, the goal is always clear: back to the wild where they belong. ๐
These spirited little characters were carefully rehabilitated and released onto the reserve, fitted with tracking collars so we can ensure theyโre safe and thriving.
Because freedom isnโt optionalโitโs everything.

Today is ๐๐ข
Today is a day to celebrate both tortoises and turtles of the world!
At WorkingAbroad, alongside our volunteers, we work with tortoises in the Galapagos and sea turtles in Costa Rica, Greece, Grenada, Mauritius, the Maldives, and Kenya!
In addition to conservation action, there is much need for re โ education and a new appreciation for these wonderful creatures. ๐
