Movement series - the Knee
I love the knees. We often easily overlook them and take them as a lesser joint in comparison to the hip or ankle. So we spend less time looking at the details of the knee until something goes wrong.
But focusing on how the knee should and shouldn’t move can help clean up confusion to how the ankle and hip should move. The knee makes a solid yet vital team along with the joints below and above to enhance smooth injury free motion.
Notice the knee has no frontal plane (side to side) movement in it but instead, perhaps surprisingly has rotation (transverse plane)
As ever, it’s usually whenever there is a problem somewhere do we look into ‘treating’ it. The problem could be isolated at the joint or the problem could be somewhere else but said knee joint is alarming you with a symptom
I want to clean up some misconceptions around the knee. So I’m creating a virtual course that I want you to be a part of. There will I help show you what the knee does and ways to incorporate it with the rest of the lower body.
If you’re interested please let me know where I can shed more light on its release 😃

Teaming up with my chum to guide a run around one of my favourite routes along the South Downs.
Get in touch and join the run from hassocks up, around Wolstonbury Hill and back.
Easy to medium abilities for two choices of routes at roughly 10k of distance and some intricate hill climbing to challenge your lactate threshold
More details to follow soon
But here is a heads up at least!

Anatomy in Motion (AiM) Foot foundations workshop, Ashford, U.K.
I enjoyed spending the day with these curious health and fitness ladies. Thank you for having me
This AiM workshop really sets the base for future learning within the Anatomy in Motion education pathway.
The goal is to understand the Flow Motion Model (FMM)
However, even at this early stage, there are plenty of applicable take aways to use on yourself or with a client/ patient in mind.
For instance;
- Looking at joints before muscles and recognising what the bones are doing statically and dynamically
- Understanding movements of the lower limb in relation to our bodies Centre of Mass
- Seeing what movements our own feet can and can’t do with both passive and active assessments
- As well as understanding what the definitions of actual pronation and supination are. Along with using wedges as tools for change
Most importantly though, having fun and sharing new experiences.
Don’t allow this knowledge to fade. Use it, develop it and have fun with it
Until the next workshop 🙌

London Foot Foundations Workshop
Overview
Our goal in this workshop is to introduce you to the value of understanding the feet when it comes to posture, alignment, movement potential and how to incorporate them into the full whole body context. We will be setting the foundations in this workshop for your future learning opportunities with AiM.
Goals
On this workshop you will:
- Get acquainted with 28 bones of the foot broken down into three segments that help us to determine the foot’s natural motion
- Begin by experiencing and discussing foot pressures and their response to CoM changes.
- Be introduced to Gary Ward's interpretation of a true pronation and supination and the parameters that determine that.
- Discover how to do a basic assessment of feet when standing and in motion
- Follow the foot's influence on posture through the rest of the body
- Use AiM wedges to begin working with the feet to see if you are able to create an environment for change for the whole body
Looking forward to going green and leading these workshops for

What can your hips do and not do ?
Move your pelvis to discover your hips. Your hip is not your pelvis though.
The hip is the space where the leg bone (femur) meets the pelvis.
The pelvis can move on top of the femur and the femur can move below the pelvis.
Below the hip along the femur you’ll bump into the knee with the shin bone (tibia)
Hopefully you’re seeing the truth behind the fact “everything is connected” as everything does have an influence on each other.
Issues around the hip can be caused by too much compression or Decompression of the hip. Both are important, especially when left in a constant state of either without experiencing it’s opposite.
Think alike to a pronating hip and a supinating hip.
Not a coincidence of language with its relationship of movement in other areas of the body.
❤️ the hip should flex and extend
💚 the hip should adduct and abduct
💙 the hip should rotate internally and externally
If these are the anatomical movements that should happen. Can you successfully achieve each of these?
Where do you rest your femurs?
Get to know your hips better and if you’ve had issues around the hips, get in touch for a chat and we can work with you

Foot mob workshop debrief and lessons
Wonderful to meet some of the members yesterday
I managed to get my hands on 8 pairs of feet.
My intention was to introduce myself to the members as well as perform a ‘quick and dirty’ style assessment of what their feet can and cannot do, summarising with some whole body movements to make some valuable change in their bodies while basing it around feet mechanics.
Here’s some things that I learnt:
- No plan survives first contact
- Quick assessments, are not.
- Some peoples needs are far more obvious than others. “It’s written on their forehead”
- People really struggle to move their bodies
- Especially the pelvis, not just the feet.
- Give them one direct movement to go away with and work on. Minimise data
- Create a framework to run your assessment in. What do you want to get out of it. What do you want to give froit ?
- Keep it basic. Nothing advanced, advances the basics first
My time keeping I need to improve on. I get carried away and want to investigate and explore further and deeper.
It was a pleasure also for my last booking to be who is a giant of a chap and came to me with a flair up of an old injury initially suffered while playing rugby at uni (dare I say at least 15years prior). Why would it play up now ? Is it random, is it from a habit of his current lifestyle ? Or is it part of a bigger response within the system ?
Movement will gives us answers. But also give us questions 🔎 🦶🏻 🔍

Foot mobilisation! -Hagrid 😆
Working online with my clients has left me eager to get ‘hands on’ feet, more!
So this Saturday morning I will be situated offering a chance to have some foot mobilisations as I work toward my target that was set by fellow AiM teacher .
Rocky, mobilised 1000 feet in a year. That is also my plan (+1 😏).
If you’re around the gym that day or in the area then please come in and introduce yourself to me.
The foot mobilisations is more than a massage. I will describe to you what movements your feet can and cannot do and give you some exercises to help restore some of the movements your feet struggle with.
Looking forward to meeting you soon 😃
Thanks to for providing such an elegant foot profile (despite lacking big toe extension and Adduction) as well as the signage 🤝

“Do you, do I?” Movement check in
This series is designed to bring awareness through the lens of your anatomical movement capabilities.
Basically, how well can you move a certain part of your body. To kick off, we are looking at the pelvis
This is giving you the opportunity to check in with your body while learning more about its movement or lack of 😅.
As well as learning about what movements should be available at that particular part of your body you can also document what you can and can’t do and work to re educate by re introducing what you can’t do back to that area 🤓📝
Movements should feel smooth and effortless. Not restrictive and limited
Document your sensations 😃
This way of checking in with your body builds upon the wake your body up series by . Whether you’re in chronic pain and want to know what’s holding you back or even an athlete looking to improve marginal gains.
You could be neither but have a curious mindset looking to know more about your body under the lens of movement.
The pelvis is a great place to start as it lies just underneath your bodies centre of mass (CoM). Your CoM will have a big influence to where your body wants to put its weight.
Let me know what you find 🔍

Excited to announce, and I, , will be combining brains to host a movement and running workshop very soon this year.
Inspired by the teachings of , we will look to create similar forward thinking, around the anatomical strategies of human running.
It will be in the Lake District and will cover useful theory and practical content to help you move and run more optimally.
Yep, bring your running shoes and your pen and notepad !
The details will be released by this weekend and we hope to have you curious humans join us for an explorative and informative day
