The thing about Shambala is that the activism and ideas run right through it, but so does the hope.

I sat in on talking through the planning behind their stunts: projecting Trump and Epstein onto Windsor Castle, pouring paint outside the Russian embassy in London until the passing traffic itself spread a giant Ukrainian flag down the road. (I’d love to see what they’d do for the water industry.)

I caught , whose book From What Is to What If shaped one of the community events I ran for . He has this knack for time-travelling you into a hopeful, thriving 2036 built entirely from projects that already exist somewhere in the world. His new one is How to Fall in Love with the Future, and it’s next on my list (he’d sold out of signed copies by the time I got there).

I caught Zack Polanski recording Bold Politics live with Femi Oluwole. And I finally experienced How To Be A Whale, Tom Mustill’s whale song sound bath, after being inspired to run my own version at a community event. Real recordings, no effects, just the voices of the deep. Extraordinary.

Behind the scenes at Shambala…. Working with the Sustainability Crew…

This is the bit I came for.

Shambala has been quietly pioneering festival sustainability for years, and getting to work behind the scenes with the team was a genuine privilege.

A few things that made me want to cheer:

No meat or fish sold on site. No cow’s milk, all the milk is oat, from a local supplier. Chocolate, coffee, sugar, bananas all Fair Trade or better, and some of the coffee traders buy direct from growers, which after volunteering on a coffee farm in Colombia means a lot to me.

Every bit of serveware home compostable, mostly bagasse, because there’s food composting all over site: caddies by your tent, bins everywhere, the lot turned into compost through hot composting, with compost loos too. It’s one of the only festivals composting food waste at this scale, which is exactly why the “no crappy bioplastic” standard matters.

No single-use cups. A ÂŁ1.50 reusable cup deposit that funds the whole washing-and-reuse system, and on the last day we stood at the exit collecting cups back, with a free-ticket prize draw to keep as many in the loop as possible.

No Coca-Cola, no Pepsi, no monopoly brands, independent traders only. Leftover food redistributed to a local community fridge, food banks and community projects. Recycling sorted by hand so it actually gets recycled. A recycling bond to bring your rubbish back. And a campsite left almost spotless, because people took their stuff home.

More festivals should be doing it like this. All of it is possible. Shambala proves it every year.

Kendal Calling. I needed that. 🎶

The week b4 last was one of the hardest of my life but I’m not ready to share why. So when a last minute opportunity came up to work with the sustainability team at Kendal Calling, it felt like the distraction I needed.

I’m glad I listened.

No van this time, just me, my new tent, a trolley and a little nest I was quietly proud of. 4 days of live music and dancing to remind me that the world is still a good place.

Not all of it was my kind of music but that’s ok as I found new bands I’d never have looked for. Highlights were Slamboree, Biffy Clyro, Sister Sisters, Gabrielle, Groove Armada, the Lancashire Hotpots, Dutty Moonshine, Mister Trick Collective. Oh and Artful Dodger through the back of a fridge, via a secret gig in a fake convenience store called Boss Man’s. As you do.

Met lovely humans. Unplugged from real life. Remembered that music and dancing are healing. ❤️‍🩹

There’s a particular quiet that comes from being on the water with a group of women who’ve all decided to slow down for the day. I felt it again on my last trip with Gutsy Girls, and it’s exactly what and I want to hold space for on 9 August.

A gentle paddle down the River Wey, time to drop into blue mind, a wild swim if it calls you, and a sound bath to finish.

We’ve extended the early bird too, so it’s £130 rather than £150 for another week Just twelve places. Come and rewild yourself a little.
