Woodhouse Grove School

Woodhouse Grove School Woodhouse Grove School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school for 2-18 year olds.

Founded in 1812 by the Methodist Conference for the education of the sons of ministers, The Grove now welcomes pupils and staff of all denominations and none. Rooted in traditions which have stood the test of time, we are nevertheless flexible enough to meet changing demands and to look to the future. In recent years the school has grown (now 750 in the senior school from age 11) but we are still small enough for all pupils to be known well and to make their mark.

October is an important month for raising awareness of ADHD, sensory processing differences, dyslexia, DCD/dyspraxia and dysgraphia.

Throughout the month, our Head of Learning Support will be sharing resources, practical strategies and insights to help staff better understand and support our students, while celebrating the many talents, perspectives and contributions of neurodiverse young people both in and beyond the classroom.

At Woodhouse Grove, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where every student feels valued, supported and empowered to thrive and achieve their potential.

Academic

Does your child SHINE in the classroom?

Do they demonstrate exceptional academic ability and a clear aptitude for high-level thinking and problem solving?

Can they show evidence of consistently performing at the top end of their age group in core academic subjects?

Year 7 applicants to The Grove can now apply for a SHINE Academic Award, offering both prestige and financial support.

Why?

Because, at The Grove, we are committed to recognising talent to maximise potential.

Recent Old Grovian academic highfliers have gone on to shine in a wide range of disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, law, business, finance and politics. They include Law Partners, Medical Consultants, a Squadron Leader, a Lord Mayor and quite a few Chief Execs and Managing Directors!

Don’t delay, the deadline for SHINE Award applications is Saturday 31st October.

Candidates who meet our criteria will take part in a Stretch Academic Assessment on our Candidate Day and our Academic Team will also contact their current school to ensure a fair and consistent view of each applicant’s ability. We want them to SHINE just as much as you do!

Raising awareness, saving lives 💙

On Monday, our Year 13 students welcomed The OddBalls Foundation for an engaging and informative session on testicular cancer awareness.

Led by Leeds Beckett University Ambassador Sophie, the talk highlighted the importance of regular self-examinations, recognising the signs and symptoms, and how early detection makes testicular cancer more than 95% curable.

A huge thank you to Sophie and The OddBalls Foundation for delivering such an important and impactful session.

STEM Club: The Perfect Toasted Marshmallow? 🔥

Over the past few weeks, our STEM Club has taken on a delicious scientific challenge – finding the perfect toasted marshmallow!

Using the scientific method, students investigated how spinning velocity and distance from the flame affected the final result. There was plenty of experimentation, problem-solving and, of course, lots of fun along the way.
A huge thank you to our Physics Technician, Mr Hamel-Smith, who got creative with a motor, variable resistor, voltmeter and a 2V battery to build prototype 'Variable Mallow Rotators' for the investigation.

This week students received an assembly from Deputy Head (Pastoral) Mr Cadman about our Grovian Values and how we can use them in our day-to-day lives.

Pupils were encouraged to think about the importance of having a voice, listening to others, respecting rules and boundaries, making positive choices, and showing respect for people with different backgrounds, beliefs and perspectives.

These ideas were linked back to the qualities we want to see in every Grovian: being inquisitive and curious, enterprising and resourceful, kind and generous, honourable and respectful, committed and resilient.

The assembly reminded pupils that values only really matter when they are visible in everyday life, in classrooms, on the sports field, on stage, in friendships and in the way we treat one another.

To see a piece of everyday here at The Grove, sign up for our upcoming open event on 15th October, The Grove in Action.

⛳ A fantastic start to the season for The Grove Golfers!

On Monday 28th September, two Grove teams competed in the Independent Schools’ Golf Association Northern Cup at Oulton Hall and produced some outstanding golf.

🏆 Seb, Henry & George were crowned Team Net Champions, finishing on 137 (-3) and winning by an impressive five shots. Henry produced a superb net 63 (-7) to also claim the Individual Net title by six shots!

Jasper, Dougie & Henry enjoyed an excellent day too, finishing 2nd in the Team Gross Competition with a combined 154, just three shots off the top spot. Dougie and Jasper both carded rounds of 77, tying for 3rd individually.

A brilliant first outing of the year, made even more exciting by the fact that almost the entire squad is below Sixth Form age.

Congratulations to all six golfers - the future of Grove Golf is looking very bright! ⛳
