This is my Year 1 class.
Half of this lot were still there in Year 8, when we finished primary school.
We all walked to school, no exceptions.
School started at 8am and finished after 4, 5 or 6 morning lessons, at the latest around 1:30pm. We had lunch at home, although children could stay for the afternoon homework school until 4pm.
We had homework every single day from almost every subject. Well... a bit too much... And it was checked in the very next lesson.
In the afternoons, we could also choose extra classes (mostly not in school): one-to-one music lessons for free (!), sports, languages and clubs.
Looking back, I realise how luxurious that was.
School was about learning, and about helping each other learn.
This is where my teaching journey began.
