“It is not my job to govern, but it is my job to ensure proper governance.”

One week to go until NGA’s Annual Governance Survey launches.

Every year, this is our biggest and most important piece of insight into what governance really looks like across trusts and schools. It’s where governors, trustees and this year, for the first time, governance professionals, tell us what’s working, what’s not, and where support is needed most.

It only takes 15 minutes to complete, you can save your progress and come back to it at any time and it directly informs how we represent and support the sector nationally.

Plus, everyone who completes the survey is automatically entered into a contest to win a £500 voucher for your school or trust!

Keep an eye out next week. We’d love you to take part.

Please contact me if you feel you could help support this wonderful school. No prior experience needed just commitment and a passion for education and young people.

Update - we currently have enough parent governors but friends of the school and caring local people are really welcome to join - please share...
We really need more governors to help with strategic leadership and support of our wonderful school. You do not need to be a parent or teacher to do this job, though you will undertake a DBS check of course. If you care about the community and you have time, wisdom and skill then do come and join us. Children and staff really need you..

This Volunteers' Week, we're recognising and thanking the governors who give their time, expertise and judgement to support independent schools.

Governance is a significant commitment. Governors bring a wealth of professional experience, ask challenging questions, provide strategic oversight and help schools navigate an increasingly complex landscape, all on a voluntary basis.

Much of this work happens behind the scenes, but its impact is felt across entire school communities.

To every governor serving an independent school, thank you for the time, care and dedication you bring to the role.

AGBIS is building a small, carefully selected pool of experienced consultants to support boards seeking external help with Head appraisal.

We are looking for individuals who:

🔵 Have substantial senior leadership experience in independent schools (ideally as a former Head)

🔵 Understand the nuances of governance, including the distinction between strategic oversight and operational management

🔵 Can offer balanced, evidence-informed evaluation alongside constructive developmental feedback

🔵 Command credibility with both Chairs and Heads, and operate with discretion and professional integrity

🔵 Have experience of, or interest in, working with Boards in both UK and international contexts

This is not about building a large directory. It is about identifying trusted individuals we can recommend with confidence.

If this is of interest, or if you would like an informal conversation, we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please do share this with colleagues who may be well suited to such work.

This has been very challenging with some schools. The details need to match exactly. Remember to get your code before your trusts confirmation statement is due!
