When schools were reopening after the initial COVID lockdown, an early years teacher told me she had never heard of a young child having mental health challenges, only teenagers.
In reality, 50% of mental illnesses have an onset before age 14 (Catania et al., 2011). While the NHS and other organisations have recognised this and have begun to put more funding into early interventions, there is still a long way to go.
As parents/carers, you can support your child by establishing protective factors against mental health challenges. These are things you are probably already doing- like having a consistent and positive relationship, providing healthy foods or modelling how to emotionally regulate. If these aren’t things you are already doing, it’s not too late to start. There are many resources available to learn from (e.g. check out Young Minds), but if you find that daunting, reach out to someone for guidance.
At Rain or Shine, we can help you find ways to incorporate protective factors into your home or work with you to turn risk factors into nurturing ones.
