This week, learners explored biological molecules through a hands-on GCSE science activity — helping them see, test and discuss key ideas in a more practical and memorable way.

October at The Discovery Barn 🌿

It’s been a busy start to the month behind the scenes.

Our GCSE groups are now underway, our Home Education Groups are starting this October, and we’re continuing to develop our primary and secondary provision for learners who need a calmer, more flexible route through education.

This term, learning at The Discovery Barn might look like:

🌿 What is EOTAS / Alternative Provision?

You may have heard terms like EOTAS, AP, EHCP, EBSA or reduced timetable — but it can all feel confusing.

EOTAS stands for Education Otherwise Than At School.
It is usually used when a child or young person has an EHCP and their education needs to be delivered somewhere other than a mainstream school setting.

Alternative Provision is education arranged outside of a mainstream classroom. This might be because a learner is finding school difficult to access, needs a smaller environment, or requires a more flexible and personalised approach.

At The Discovery Barn, learners may come to us for support with:

🌿 Anxiety or EBSA
🌿 SEND needs
🌿 Confidence-building

Home Education Groups starting in October 🌿

We’re finalising places for our small Home Education Groups at The Discovery Barn in Lanivet.

Starting as a 4-week pilot, the groups will offer calm, practical and hands-on learning for home educated learners in a small, supportive environment.

We are offering:

Primary Barn Explorers
A gentle, creative group for primary-aged learners.
Secondary Wednesdays
A more grown-up project-based group for older learners.

Activities may include cooking, textiles, technology, creative projects, outdoor learning, life skills and supported social opportunities.

Wednesdays
Full day: 9:30am–2:30pm — £55
Half day: 9:30am–12:00pm — £30
Small groups — max 6 learners

Social confidence doesn’t always come naturally 🌿

For some children, being around others can feel overwhelming.

They may need time to feel safe, trusted adults nearby, gentle encouragement and activities that give them a reason to connect without too much pressure.

At The Discovery Barn, our small primary groups are designed to support children through calm, practical and hands-on learning.

This might include cooking, crafts, outdoor learning, sensory activities, life skills, creative projects and shared tasks.

Through these activities, children can practise:
Taking turns
Sharing space
Making choices
Communicating ideas
Building independence
Trying something new
Working alongside others

For many children, confidence grows slowly — through small, positive experiences that feel safe and manageable.
