A wonderful weekend of learning, discovery and development for a small group of forest school professionals.

A and first aid course. Admittedly an intensive couple of days but the group performed admirably with great skill development of two days and exhibited a good background knowledge. Well done all.

On almost every First Aid course we facilitate, we are asked about Choking Vacuum devices.

We provide solely regulated qualifications, and as such, we provide the information and content that is supplied to us by our awarding organisation; how we present that information to candidates is upon us as trainers and assessors.

That information and the content, in essence cascades from European Resuscitation guidelines to the Resuscitation Council UK. Their position is “We do not currently support their use, as there is insufficient research and evidence on the safety or effectiveness of these devices.”
“The scientific evidence for the treatment of choking was first reviewed by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) in 2020. This review formed the basis of current European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) guidelines. Read our guidelines for choking in adults and children.”

Current Choking Guidance
The Resuscitation Council UK recommendations focus on encouraging the conscious person to cough. If coughing becomes ineffective, give back blows and abdominal thrusts for adults/children, and chest thrusts if they are an infant.

If the person becomes unconscious, CPR should be started without delay. Avoid inserting anything into the mouth in an attempt to remove a foreign body, as it may inadvertently drive it further into the airway.
