Why do we expect so many kids to “just get” reading. Cognitive science has shown that learning to read causes profound changes in the brain, creating a new network that previously didn’t exist. Cognitive science research has also shown that kids learn best when given a systematic, explicit phonics approach.

Beginners need leveled material

When we teach kids to read, we often mistakenly give them tasks that aren’t really doable (considering their current skill level). As a result, kids can look at you with frustration and a lost look in their eyes. Sometimes educators are surprised when they see that their student needs to painstakingly go through the sounds. Even linking sounds is hard.
When we watch a beginning reader, we should think about how difficult learning to read really is. Our brains want to tell us learning to reading is easy. But we have to set this assumption aside. Learning to read is actually very hard. It’s easy for us because we’ve had decades of daily practice.

Reading has many psychological benefits for young children

Early reading ignites creativity, sparks curiosity, and stimulates the imagination in young children. Often, this leads to role-play as children grow which helps to develop other skills such as empathy, problem-solving, and morality. While these are significant benefits to young children, the biggest psychological benefit is how reading helps to grow self-confidence and independence from such an early age.

The simple act of taking time out of the day to read to your baby or sit down with your child helps to promote greater maturity and discipline. These are all so essential when it comes to your child learning to read in a school setting as sometimes the psychological pressure can be too much.

Play Word Games
Getting your child involved in reading doesn’t have to be about just books. Word games can be a great way to engage your child’s skills without reading a whole story at once.

One of our favorite reading games only requires a stack of Post-It notes and a bunched-up sock. For this activity, write sight words or words your child can sound out onto separate Post-It notes. Then stick the notes to the wall.

Your child can then stand in front of the Post-Its with the bunched-up sock in their hands. You say one of the words and your child throws the sock-ball at the Post-It note that matches!
Read With Unconventional Materials
In the same way that word games can help your child learn how to read, so can encouraging your child to read without actually using books!

If you’re interested in doing this, consider using PlayDoh, clay, paint, or indoor-safe sand to form and shape letters or words.

Another option is to fill a large pot with magnetic letters. For emerging learners, suggest that they pull a letter from the pot and try to name the sound it makes. For slightly older learners, see if they can name a word that begins with the same sound, or grab a collection of letters that come together to form a word.

As your child becomes more proficient, you can scale these activities to make them a little more advanced. And remember to have fun with it!

Children might also be encouraged to analyze larger chunks of letters in words. So, for example, they could be given a list of words such as ‘cat’, ‘bat’, ‘hat’, ‘mat’ and ‘sat’ and it might be expected that they could identify the letter combination ‘at’ from these words.

The idea is that once they’ve learned this information they should be able to read a previously unseen word such as ‘pat’ because it’s made up of letter patterns they’ve already encountered in other words

A good reading program should introduce actual reading as soon as possible. But before the child is able to perform the simple act of decoding words such as mat and if, the child must have some important prereading skills. We can figure out what most of those skills are by deter mining what a child would have to do to read a simple, regularly spelled word like mat.

The most obvious skill the child needs is knowledge of the sounds that each letter makes. This fact suggests some pre teaching in sound identification. Disaster does not initially teach letter names, because letter names play no direct role in reading words. The simplest way to demonstrate this fact is to say the letter names "em." "ay," and "tee" very fast and see if they

Traditional reading programs are poor devices for teaching all children because they do not have provisions for communicating clearly. To appreciate the pitfalls that are involved in clear communication, we have to put ourselves in the place of the child who is trying to learn to read. This child may no: understand exactly what reading is or precisely how one goes about doing it. Adults may have a clear idea of what they are t trying to tell the child, but things may look quite different from the child's perspective. Let's say that we teach the child to look at the first letter of words and identify those words (an activity common in poor reading programs). We might begin by presenting words that are easy to distinguish by looking at the first letter. Here's a possible list of such words:

Although the native child might quickly "read" those words by looking at the first letter, the child may later encounter a serious problem. As soon as we introduce a new word that begins with the same letter that one of those first words begins with, we will probably discover that the child confuses the new word with the familiar word. For example, when we introduce the word him, we will probably discover that the child calls the word he, because both words begin with h.

This example points out a very important feature of poor communication in a teaching sequence. The problem that the communication creates is not evident at the time the teaching occurs. The child in the example reads the initial set of words without a hitch.

There has been a great debate on what method of teaching is best to teach children how to read: whether phonics or the whole language method is better. The whole language learning to read method is more of a "word memorization" plan, where a young child is supposed to memorize the "shape" of the word, and say it.

It is important to distinguish the difference between phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness is very broad, and includes phonemic awareness as a sub category. Phonemic awareness is very narrow, and it is only focused on the phonemes, which are the individual sounds of letters. There are no shortage of studies which have repeatedly found and concluded that teaching phonemic awareness to young children produces exceptional reading and spelling abilities. The whole language method simply expects a child to "read" when presented reading material, and by memorizing sight words. The phonics method is a bottom up approach where you teach children to read in a logical and sequential order. You first teach children the alphabet letters and the sounds they represent; then you teach children to combine (or blend) various letter sounds together to form words; which is then followed by reading sentences and simple stories. This is a logical progression for children learning to read, where they develop accuracy in decoding words and pronouncing words. This method of teaching also helps the child to spell correctly.

Teaching your baby to read is becoming more and more high priority for parents now as it becomes clear that learning to read at a young age offers numerous advantages for the child once he or she begins school. Studies have consistently found that teaching a baby to read and helping children develop phonemic awareness well before entering school can significantly improve their development in reading and spelling. However, when it comes to teaching babies to read, there are two main teaching methods.

These two main methods of teaching a baby or child to read are the whole language method, and the phonics and phonemic awareness method (the phonetic approach), which should be the preferred teaching method in helping children learn to read. Some prefer the whole language method, while others use the phonics approach, and there are also educator that use a mix of different approaches. With the Look-say approach of whole language learning, a child begins with memorizing sight words, and then taught various strategies of figuring out the text from various clues.

I would like to further expand on that by saying that children as young as four years old can learn to read through phonics and phonemic awareness instructions. If a young child can speak, then they should be able to learn to read, even if they are as young as two years old. In fact, I have proven this with my own children. We started teaching our daughter at 2 years and 8months, and she was very capable at reading by the time she was just 2 years and 11 months old.
