Great to see the collaboration between University of Birmingham and Mackenzie Presbyterian University developing, together with the University of Tel Aviv. Congratulations to Dr Mayra Muller Spaniol and all of the team

Today we celebrate World Portuguese Language Day.

In 2009 the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) officially established 5 May as a date to celebrate the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures.

In 2019, the 40th session of UNESCO's General Conference declared 5 May as "World Portuguese Language Day".

is an official language in 9 countries across South America, Africa, Europe and Asia. Spoken by 287 million people, it is the most widely spoken language in the Southern Hemisphere.

Similarly to other widely spoken languages, Portuguese has evolved in unique ways around the world. Brazilian Portuguese has been strongly influenced by Amerindian and African languages, both in terms of its sounds and its rich vocabulary.
