Join us for the launch of Marley Starskey Butler’s Compensare: For the Swallows We Weigh, Friday 23 January, 6–8pm Everyone is welcome!

Our latest Incidental Artist project has been developed during a ten-month placement at Beacon Family Services, an organisation in Birmingham providing therapeutic and relational play services for parents, carers, and families.

Set against a backdrop where political priorities and funding decisions continually shape access to therapeutic services, the exhibition illuminates how these systemic forces intersect with the lived realities of families and the professionals who support them.

Marley Starskey Butler is a Birmingham based interdisciplinary artist and qualified social worker. Their practice interweaves storytelling, memory, and emotional landscapes to explore how people make meaning of personal and collective narratives within systems of care. Marley was Wheatley Fellow with us and 2024-2025.

EP Recommends: get yourself to to see the magnificent show: Mmm Gotta Try a Little Harder, It Could Be Sweet. I’ve been singing that gorgeous song every time I come across the title, the poster, the book, the awesome bits that were photographed here at Eastside (first pic) during our wonderful (if I do say so myself) show back in 2020. I loved being the ‘exploded body’ of Harold, soaking in all the sounds and surfaces and brainwaves with such a softness and generosity. It’s on till 1 March, so no excuse! X

The life and times of an Artist-Curator Trainee at Eastside Projects! We have had an amazing 18 months with powering the EP team to great heights, ascending with his curated show The Hole in the Whole into fully fledged Artist-Curator status. If you’re looking for a young artist, curator, artist-curator with a strong moral compass, sharp insights, carefully developed ideas and an eye for detail, you could go no better. Thanks for all your hard work and dedication Harman, you’re going on to do even greater things. We love you loads. Here’s to an upturn of support and possibilities in the artworld landscape for 2026 💥

Had an amazing walk from Birmingham New St out to Spaghetti Junction and Star City yesterday along the canals with spying inventive making processes along the way and the spread of car industry across North Birmingham’s landscapes. I was flagging with flu and saved half way by Harriet’s flask of oaty tea, was so delicious! Looking forward to the Incidental Artist ripples of these doings, noises and masala bean cheese toasties at star city! It’s a wondrous walk. Recommend it. Intriguing new Bill Drummond painting under the junction he hasn’t told me about either!

The essay is accompanied by drawings and notes that were shown and performed as part of the group show ‘The Hole in the Whole’ curated by
