🌞 What actually happens during a Solar Eclipse? 🌑
Imagine standing outside in the middle of the day… and suddenly, the Sun begins to disappear.
But where does it go? 👀
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun.
🌞 SUN → 🌑 MOON → 🌍 EARTH
The Moon blocks some or all of the Sun’s light, causing its shadow to fall on part of the Earth.
There are three main types:
🌑 Total Solar Eclipse
The Moon completely covers the Sun. For a short time, daytime can become dramatically darker and the Sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, becomes visible.
🌗 Partial Solar Eclipse
Only part of the Sun is covered by the Moon, making the Sun appear as though a piece has been taken out of it.
💍 Annular Solar Eclipse
The Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but appears slightly too small to cover it completely. This leaves a bright circle around the Moon known as the “ring of fire.”
🤔 But the Moon goes around Earth every month. Why don’t we get an eclipse every month?
Because the Moon’s orbit is tilted by about 5° compared with Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
Most months, the Moon’s shadow passes above or below Earth. A solar eclipse occurs only when the Sun, Moon and Earth line up in just the right way.
And here’s the amazing part:
🌞 The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon…
…but it is also roughly 400 times farther away.
That coincidence is why the Sun and Moon can appear almost the same size in our sky, allowing spectacular total solar eclipses to happen.
⚠️ Never look directly at a solar eclipse without certified eclipse eye protection. Ordinary sunglasses are not safe.
