Struggling with THAT advert? You’re not being dramatic, the research backs up why it landed the way it did.

Women’s sport has never been “just sport.” From the FA’s 50-year ban on women’s football to the 32-year Olympic ban on women running over 200m, decisions about women’s bodies in sport have always been decisions made by systems, not accidents.

Sport still has a pattern today: it under-researches women, over-scrutinises their bodies, and then acts surprised when they walk away. The advert isn’t the cause. It’s a symptom of decisions a whole system has been making about women’s bodies for a long time.

And it has landed so badly because it reenforces the structures we are trying to dismantle.

Elite sport now spans decades of a woman’s life, including the years when fertility naturally changes. New proposals to fund egg freezing for athletes are being framed as giving women more choice. But choice only exists with the right information, at the right time, and without pressure attached.

Fertility preservation is one option. It isn’t a guarantee, and it shouldn’t become another expectation placed on female athletes. What they need first is education, early conversations, and proper clinical support, not a workaround for a system that doesn’t flex around motherhood.

Knowledge changes outcomes. Every athlete deserves access to it.

Keeping teenage girls active isn’t just about their health in the here and now, it can have impacts all the way through to menopause!

Higher starting bone density means that as estrogen drops during menopause bones stay healthy, for longer.

“Just get back to it” is not a return-to-sport plan.

For many postpartum athletes, that’s exactly what it feels like. A six-week check, a nod from a GP, and a build back designed for someone recovering from illness or injury.

A woman’s body undergoes significant physiological change during and after pregnancy and needs a graded, individual approach to return to training safely. Not a fixed date. Not a generic plan. A process guided by coaches who are educated on their experiences.

New research shows that 2+ hours of strength training a week can lower the risk of heart attack by 44% 💪

But finding that time in midlife, among working, caregiving and menopause, can be difficult for women.

Small consistent training and working with trainers who understand the menopause could help.
