Meaningful Maths Maths tutoring sessions Welcome to Meaningful Maths, the home of interesting maths, and the kind of maths that surrounds us in the world.

Maths at school tends to be taught in a very abstract way that children find either boring or difficult to understand. The problem is compounded by various myths that suggest that only some people are good at maths, that people either have a gift for maths or they don’t, that being good at maths means being fast, and that making mistakes means you do not have a gift for maths. These myths are all

false. In fact, everybody can be good at maths. Working towards a deep understanding of concepts and ideas is far more important than being fast. Recent evidence also shows that it is important to make mistakes, and that mistakes actually grow your brain. Here at Meaningful Maths the sessions include activities that are designed to get you thinking hard about maths concepts and to get you enjoying maths and having fun! Our sessions are specifically taught in groups so that students are able to work on problems together and talk about maths, which is really important for learning. Talking about maths allows you to access a different level of understanding to that gained by working through questions on your own. When you talk about maths you participate in something very important called reasoning. Reasoning is when you talk through your methods and give reasons for the choices you made. This is the essence of mathematics. If you are able to think about the pathways you are taking when solving a maths problem, explain them to someone else, and then discuss those choices, then you are doing something incredibly important.

This week's puzzle is a shape puzzle. All you need is a square of paper cut diagonally from corner to corner, so that you end up with 4 isosceles triangles (see picture). An isosceles triangle is a triangle that has 2 sides of equal length. Your challenge is to make as many different shapes as you can by fitting all 4 triangles back together. You must use all 4 triangles and you can only fit long sides to long sides and short sides to short sides. The whole length of the side must be joined.

Things to ponder:

How many shapes can you make?
How do you know when you've found all possible shapes?

Hi to anyone still out there following this page 😊 I haven't posted on here for a while (personal stuff) but I still love maths and making people think about it/showing that there are different ways to enjoy (yes I said ENJOY 🤣) maths! As I'm currently helping someone out with some maths I thought I would share the weekly puzzles on here. If you can engage your kids (or yourself lol) then without specifically telling them they're doing maths, they're doing maths - perfect for the summer holidays. If anybody wants to share ideas/thoughts behind the puzzles (which obviously grows a deeper understanding) then please feel free to leave comments to start a discussion. For anyone old enough to get The Karate Kid reference then this is Mr Miyagi style maths 🤣😍

Last week's puzzle was one called 'Magic V's'. All you basically need for this is 5 small pieces of paper with the numbers 1 - 5 written on them (see picture). The aim of the puzzle is to make both arms of the V add up to the same amount. The example in the picture doesn't work as the left arm adds up to 6 and the right arm adds up to 12. Change the numbers around (keeping the V shape) until you find a solution that works.

Things to think about:

How many ways can you solve the puzzle?
How do you know when you've found all the solutions?
What do you notice about the solutions you find?
Can you explain what you see?

This is Albrecht Durer's Magic Square - not only to do rows, columns, and diagonals add up to 34, but so do all the combinations of 4 numbers marked by linked dots in the squares.

You should also avoid “educational games.” Most of these are painful to play. Choose games that are fun to play. Remember – the academic objective is not math skills, but problem solving.
