World Teachers’ Day – 5th October

Today, we want to say thank you.

For the care, commitment and professionalism you bring to children and young people every day. For noticing when something doesn’t seem quite right, for listening when a child needs to talk, and for helping to create a safe space where pupils feel supported and able to speak.

Safeguarding is such an important part of what you do, often woven quietly into everyday conversations, relationships and routines.

Thank you for the difference you make, and for everything you do to help children feel safe, heard and supported.

Our face-to-face training gives delegates dedicated time to step away from their day-to-day activities, ask questions, work through practical safeguarding scenarios and learn alongside other safeguarding professionals.

Whether you are new to the DSL role or due your 2-yearly update, these sessions provide an opportunity to refresh knowledge, explore current statutory guidance and reflect on safeguarding practice within your setting.

The new Information Sharing Duty comes into force today.

From today, 30th September 2026, the new statutory duty on information sharing takes effect.

For safeguarding practitioners, the key points are:

Relevant information must be shared where the duty applies and sharing may help another organisation safeguard or promote the welfare of a child.

There is no statutory threshold that must be met before information can be shared.
Consent is not required where the statutory duty applies.

The common law duty of confidentiality does not require a separate public interest test where the duty applies.

Professional judgement still matters. The duty does not apply where sharing would be more detrimental to the child than not sharing.

Alongside the guidance, Tier 1 and Tier 2 template data sharing agreements have also been published to support local arrangements.

If your safeguarding team hasn’t already done so, now is a good time to read the guidance together and consider what it means for practice in your setting.

In case you missed it, our latest safeguarding newsletter covers two important updates for schools this September.

Governors and regulated activity

KCSIE 2026 confirms that being a governor does not, on its own, amount to regulated activity relating to children.

However, additional checks may be needed where a governor also carries out a separate, regular role within school.

Things to consider:

💡 Is this part of their strategic governance role, or are they carrying out a separate role within school?

💡 What are they actually doing as part of that additional role?

💡 How frequently are they doing it?

The new Information Sharing Duty

The new duty comes into force on 30th September 2026.

Relevant safeguarding information must be shared where it could help another agency support a child, so safeguarding teams should review the new guidance and their data-sharing arrangements before the duty takes effect.

Could every child in your setting be heard?

International Week of Deaf People is a useful reminder that accessible communication is an important part of safeguarding.

For Deaf children and young people, barriers to communication can make it harder to share worries or ask for help.

This week, consider whether your safeguarding information and reporting routes are accessible to every child.

Useful free resources are available from the British Deaf Association and Signature.

Have you checked that everyone in your early years setting has completed the right safeguarding training?

The EYFS requires safeguarding training to meet the specific criteria set out in Annex C. This applies to practitioners in school and other group-based settings.

It is not enough to assume that any standard safeguarding course will meet the above requirement.

Three practical checks to complete:

✅ Has everyone working with children aged 0–5 completed training that meets EYFS Annex C?

✅ Is this EYFS Annex C training included in your induction arrangements for new starters and assistants?

✅ Has your Early Years Designated Safeguarding Lead (EYDSL) completed the additional training module covering the EYDSL requirements?
