A Peek into Our Provision…

This week, our investigation area has been filled with beautiful sunflowers for the children to observe, explore and draw. 🌻

As the children settle into their new classroom, this inviting experience provides a lovely starting point for conversations about their summer adventures, the changing seasons and the natural world around them. What can they see? How do the flowers feel and smell? What might be hiding inside the flower heads?

Our Nursery children will be encouraged to explore the flowers using their senses and develop the language to describe what they notice, while our Reception children will begin to look more closely, make careful observations and think about how sunflowers change through the seasons.

Over the coming days, we will add magnifying glasses, tweezers and sorting trays so that the children can examine the sunflowers more closely, carefully remove the seeds and make their own discoveries.

These simple, hands-on experiences encourage curiosity, careful observation, new vocabulary and meaningful conversations—while helping children connect their experiences at home with their learning in school.

What can you discover?

Can you spot any early signs of autumn on your journey to school? You could bring in a fallen leaf, take a photograph or simply tell us what you noticed—we would love to share your discoveries in class! šŸšŸ‚

Behind the Play…

This week, we observed some wonderful ideas developing in our block area. What began as one child carefully balancing blocks to create a tall tower soon became a castle—complete with knights, a dragon and safety cones to protect everyone nearby if it toppled!

As the castle grew taller, the child compared blocks of different sizes and experimented with how they could work together. Smaller blocks were combined to match the height or length of larger ones, matching pieces were positioned on either side, and curved blocks were carefully balanced before planks were placed across them. We also explored how narrowing the structure towards the top could help a tall tower remain stable.

Another child was inspired by the castle but developed the idea in a completely different way, using the blocks to create enclosing castle walls. This became a princess’s castle and prompted conversations about what might be found inside—including a wardrobe and the clothes the princesses might wear.

Behind this play was a wealth of early mathematics: comparing size and length, composing shapes, matching heights, exploring symmetry and using positional language such as on top, next to and between. Alongside this, the children were designing, solving problems, managing risks, sharing ideas and creating their own imaginative stories.

Where might the play lead next?

The children’s enthusiasm has inspired us to explore what castle photographs, flags and storytelling resources we might introduce. As their ideas continue to grow, so will the possibilities for their play.

We are so proud of our wonderful Year 6 children and their SATs results! āļø

An amazing 75% of our children achieved the expected standard in Reading, Writing and Maths combined (well above the national average of 63%). In Writing, Reading and GPAS, 87.5% achieved the expected standard or above (exceeding National Averages of 73%, 75% and 74% respectively).

We are also delighted that 12.5% of these children achieved greater depth in all three subjects, exceeding the national average of 9%.

These wonderful achievements reflect the hard work, perseverance and support for one another that they have shown throughout the year (and indeed throughout their time in school as a whole).

We wish them all the happiness in the world as they move on to secondary school. We will miss them terribly, but know they will continue to make us proud and embrace all new opportunities offered to them. ā¤ļø

Enjoy your last day here at Binbrook!
