Eight years. Two photos. One decision.

The photo on the left was taken just one month before I stopped drinking.

I was 52.
Gabe was 9.

At the time, I thought I was doing okay. I loved my boys, worked hard and did my best.

But looking back, I wasn’t living anywhere near my potential… and I don’t think I was showing them what was possible either.

Fast forward eight years.

I’m now 60 and eight years alcohol-free.

Since then I’ve lost five stone, climbed mountains, Kilimanjaro , trekked across Patagonia and to Everest BC, watched countless sunrises, found a purpose I never knew I had, and built a life I genuinely don’t want to escape from.

This week I picked Gabe up from Heathrow after three weeks camping, trekking and volunteering in Tanzania.

Watching him walk through Arrivals with a backpack almost as big as he is, I couldn’t help but smile.

Children don’t become what we tell them to become.

They become what they see.

I’m not saying his adventure happened because I stopped drinking.

But I do believe that when one person changes the trajectory of their life, it quietly changes the trajectory of the family around them.

Maybe that’s one of the greatest gifts we can give our children.

Not perfection.

Not money.

Not endless advice.

Just the courage to keep growing… and the example that it’s never too late to become the person you were capable of being all along.

The greatest inheritance we leave our children isn’t money. It’s the example of what’s possible.

Your future self is watching.

Yesterday I stood on the highest point in Madeira and watched the sun come up.

Then I started the walk back down while most of the island was still asleep.

As I was walking, I had one overwhelming thought…

This isn’t luck.

It’s the result of thousands of small decisions.

Years ago I’d have missed this.

I’d have been tired.

Hungover.

Promising myself that ā€œnext weekā€ I’d change.

Instead, yesterday I was standing above the clouds.

Not because I’m special.

Because one day I removed the first drink.

That one decision led to another.

A walk.

A run.

A healthier meal.

An earlier night.

A clearer mind.

One decision became a different identity.

People often think giving up alcohol means giving something up.

I see it differently.

It gave me mornings.

It gave me energy.

It gave me adventures.

It gave me this moment.

You don’t have to climb mountains.

But you do have to make the first decision.

Because your future isn’t built in one giant leap…

It’s built one small choice at a time.

ā¤ļø If you’re reading this on Day 1, Day 10 or Day 1000…

Keep making the next right decision.

You never know where it’ll take you.

šŸ‘‡ Tell us… what’s one small decision you’re making today that your future self will thank you for?

This morning I changed my route. šŸƒā˜€ļø

Instead of running my usual six miles, I drove over to where I grew up.

Parked at m Mums house

I ran down to the seawall at Stanford-le-Hope, where my dad and I used to walk our dog when I was five or six years old.

Past the old Shell refinery where I started as a 16-year-old apprentice.

Around The Dip, where we used to sledge in the winter.

Past old friends’ houses.

It wasn’t just a run…

It was like every corner unlocked another memory.

And it reminded me of something we don’t talk about enough.

Our brains are association machines.

They link places to memories.
Songs to people.
Smells to moments.

And after years of drinking, they also link…

ā˜€ļø Sunshine to rosĆ©.
šŸŗ Friday nights to beer.
āœˆļø Holidays to cocktails.
šŸ’’ Weddings to champagne.
😩 Stress to alcohol.
šŸŽ‰ Celebrations to drinking.

One of our Community members posted this morning from Paris. She realised she wasn’t really craving wine…

She was craving the sunshine.
The terraces.
The atmosphere.
The freedom.

Her brain had simply learned to connect those experiences with alcohol.

The good news?

What the brain learns, it can relearn.

Every alcohol-free wedding…

Every sober holiday…

Every Friday night…

Every barbecue…

Every morning run…

You’re creating new pathways.

You’re teaching your brain that joy, connection, adventure and peace don’t need alcohol.

Nearly eight years ago, I couldn’t imagine a summer’s day without a drink.

Now I can’t imagine wasting a summer’s morning with a hangover.

The old story has gone.

A new one has taken its place.

So if you’re struggling today, remember this…

You’re not fighting yourself. You’re rewiring yourself.

And every alcohol-free choice is strengthening that new pathway.

One day you’ll realise you no longer think about alcohol in the situations that once seemed impossible.

That’s when you know your life has truly changed. ā¤ļø

Eight years ago, I was slowly shrinking my life. Today, I’m still expanding it. ā¤ļø

As we head into another summer weekend, here’s what I’ve learned:

Alcohol promises more but often delivers less. Less health. Less energy. Less presence. Less of you.

Going alcohol-free didn’t shrink my life—it expanded it.

I’ve lost 77lbs (5½ stone), normalised my blood pressure, found peace from anxiety, improved my relationships, built a thriving community, work fewer days, earn more, and wake up with clarity, meaning and purpose.

Standing on mountains like this, I still think:

I nearly missed this life.

The biggest gift of going alcohol-free isn’t just better health—it’s becoming someone you trust again and creating a life you no longer need to escape from.

So this weekend, don’t focus on what you’re giving up.

Focus on what you’re making space for.

One peaceful morning. One clear head. One small step.

Eight years later, I’m still taking those small steps… and my life is still expanding. ā¤ļø
