I know what you’re going to say, but hear me out…

It does look like a shod in this horse’s toes a lot, in reality it’s not as such. Thoroughbred feet definitely get compromised due to their weak nature and a lot of the time the toe does grow excessively. This can be recognised through wear patterns on the shoes and how the horse moves, I know from all sorts of shoeing protocols, this horse goes a lot better the way I’ve shod it.

I’m not gon get mad about this little bit of rain it was surprisingly hot yesterday so I didn’t mind it.

We have been exceptionally lucky this year with the weather!

I appreciate I don’t post as many hind feet so I got my camera out today and caught some footage.

Since the rain has come the lighter footed horses have suffered. Their hooves have grown like crazy and broken away.

It really was incredible to see the feet in such good quality when it was so dry!

You won’t believe it but this gurls other front hoof was quite badly affected with thrush in the frog.

I wonder sometimes if it’s the way they like to stand in their stalls? I don’t know why some hooves are affected and the other side isn’t! 🤔

Since we’ve had a bit of rain the frogs soon start with signs of thrush.
Remember thrush is an anaerobic bacterial infection in the soft tissue of the frog!
We can only treat this by exposing the tissue to air, keeping the hoof clean and using antibacterial solutions of varying strengths.

Oooh what sweet feet’s you have! Some horses are an absolute joy to work on. This horse is, she’s so good in every way!

This horse is an ex race horse which had damage to the caudal aspect of his hoof. He underwent a full diagnosis at a local equine hospital and the findings were multiple sites of concern in his caudal hoof.

The palmer angle of p3 was negative and there was damage to the nacular bone, ligament and surrounding structures.

We tried a few different approaches but found he was most comfortable with a raised heel pad and shorted toe.

He will never be 100% sound unfortunately due to the changes inside his hoof as the damage was irreversible even with medical intervention however, we mange to keep him comfortable enough to go out for a light hack every once in a while.

Yeah the pink stuff is common and it’s dental impression material and yeah it has lots of properties.

1, it absorbs concussive forces to the hoof.
2, it helps share load and engages all the structures.
3, it stops dirt and foreign objects getting trapped under the pad.
4, it looks cool.
5, it’s fun to mix! 😜

Also the blue stuff or copper sul power which stops bacteria building up under the pad.

This horse has a very unique setup.

Usually I wouldn’t advocate such a degree of heel raise but after a complex diagnosis of the caudal region with multiple findings we have to raise the heels as such to keep him comfortable.

He is pretty much retired now but has a great quality of life! 🙌🏼
