Introducing the work of studio member Anne Marie Mullen

These striking sculptural pieces are part of Anne Marie’s ongoing series, Showstoppers - expressive ceramic figures that seem to emerge directly from the forms themselves.

Created using crank clay layered with slips, each piece balances raw texture with incredibly refined detail. The contrast between the roughness of the clay body and the delicacy of the finishing gives the work a remarkable sense of character and presence.

A beautiful example of storytelling through clay.

A second way to finish the form.

In this part, we explore an alternative approach to refining and removing the piece from the wheel.

The surface is first cleaned to remove excess moisture, allowing for better control and a smoother finish. The base is then carefully defined, creating a clear edge before cutting the piece free with a wire tool.

With steady, supported hands, the form is gently lifted from the wheel maintaining its shape while still soft.

A careful and controlled process that ensures a clean, confident finish.

Follow along to explore different approaches to wheel throwing.

Kiln Rental at Belfast Ceramics Studio

We offer flexible electric kiln rentals for both individuals and makers working on larger projects.

Choose between pay-per-piece firing or booking a full kiln, depending on your needs. We fire from bisque temperatures up to cone 10 (high fire), with a range of kiln sizes available.

For decal or lustre firings, full kiln booking is required.

We recommend allowing at least two weeks’ notice to schedule a firing. Work can be brought in by arrangement, and larger or fragile pieces should be loaded by the maker.

A reliable, flexible option to support your making process.

Looking for flexible studio time without committing to a course?

Our Pay As You Go sessions offer independent access to the studio in a calm, self-directed environment. Ideal for improvers and experienced makers who want to practise, experiment or develop personal projects at their own pace.

Book a 2-hour session and enjoy access to studio tools, equipment and workspace. While this is not a taught class, support is available if needed.

You’re welcome to use studio clay or bring your own (please ensure it is suitable for our firing temperatures). Work and materials should be taken away at the end of each session.

A simple, flexible way to keep making.

Every thrown piece starts here.

In Part 1 of our mini series, we focus on centering clay on the wheel: the foundation of all wheel throwing.

From preparing and securing the clay to controlling movement and pressure, this process removes any wobble and creates a stable base for shaping.

Mastering this step is key to everything that follows.

More coming in Part 2.
