Today, we celebrate the 81st Anniversary of Victory in Japan - it was the day in 1945 on which Imperial Japan surrendered in the Second World War, in effect bringing the war to an end.

We remember and reflect on the sacrifice of British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces, who gave so that we might be free.

112 years ago today, on 4th August 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany following the German invasion of Belgium.

Today, we remember all of those brave men from our native shores who made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who returned wounded and broken.

At the going down off the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them

02/08/2026

On this day in 1917, the 107th Brigade relieved the 55th Division in the front line, taking over the position that would become known as the Black Line.

The 15th (North Belfast) Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles, recorded in their Unit War Diary that the relief was completed under a heavy enemy barrage:

β€œPouring rain & the ground 18” deep in mud.”

That was their welcome to the Third Battle of Ypres a battlefield that would become synonymous with relentless shellfire, torrential rain, and unimaginable conditions.

For the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division, their first experience of the 3rd Battle of Ypres was one of mud, rain, and war at its most unforgiving.

In remembrance of Rifleman John Eagle who served in the Great War with the 8th Battalion, East Belfast, Royal Irish Rifles.

He died on 3rd August 1917 due to wounds received in action. Remembered with honour, buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.

He is a relative of several of our members.

We would like to thank our friends from East End Great War Society for taking time out of their trip to pay their respects at his grave this morning.

We will remember them
