Annnd we’re back to it! ❄️ I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and New Year 🎄 ♥️

⬇️Those magic words every teacher loves to hear!

I’ve always had a soft-spot for working with resit students. Missing the mark in Year 11 can feel like the end of the world, after months of pressure and anxiety during exam season, and then facing the prospect of up to 2 more years of maths lessons, alongside FE studies, with a new class and teacher.

Just a few months of consistent hard work, confidence building and some 1-1 tuition to identify weaknesses can make such a difference. Thinking of everyone collecting resit results today 🤞🏼

Happy Half Term! 🎃
A quick update.
I have decided to remove online learning from my list of available services. I don’t feel like I can offer the best of my abilities via an online platform; given the nature of my work, and my teaching style/personality, I feel like my skill set is made better use of in person.

If you come across my page specifically looking for online learning, please do still get in touch, and I will try to connect you with a friend or colleague who does offer it 🙂

Enjoy the rest of holidays!

HAPPY WEEKEND!

The end of the first full week of term 1! And what a week it’s been!

On a personal level, this school year is special for me. I’ve taken the leap to make tuition my primary job, and I’m so, so pleased I have. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have so many well-mannered, hardworking, all-round fabulous students (and caring parents) in my home.

Teenagers often don’t get enough credit. Going to an unfamiliar teacher’s house, to work on a subject you find challenging and overwhelming; after a full day at school, and usually extra-curricular clubs too, is incredible, and shows great strength of character. 15/16 year old me would have never! Feeling very proud- week 1 nailed 👏🏼 🎉

HOW CAN YOU HELP AS A PARENT?

‘I’m rubbish at maths.’ … ‘I couldn’t even help with their primary school homework’ … ‘I wouldn’t even know where to start.’

Pretty much every parent I meet with tells me some variation of the above!

Firstly, by seeking tuition, you are already going above and beyond for your child, by adding yet another after school activity to a hectic week, and taking responsibility for their education before it’s too late 👏🏼

And you can help with maths in more ways than you probably realise! Almost every student I meet has a gap in their knowledge from when they were much younger, that was never ironed out. I will discuss the most common below.

-Negative numbers. I meet so many students who can fly through trigonometry and simultaneous equations, but negative numbers trip them up frequently!
This is a great starting point if you want to practice something at home. Print out a number line for every room of the house. Practice simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with numbers below zero (I can provide worksheets if needed).
Link them to every day scenarios: ‘if you’ve already borrowed £5 from me, and then you borrow another £12, how much do you owe me?’(-5 - 12).

-Timestables! Repeat them. Over and over again!
-Basic methods of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Another really common pitfall.
-Improving general fluency with numbers, pattern recognition, and inverse operations: ‘if 10 x 5= 50, then 50/5 must be…’

And the big one- encouraging slow, calm and thorough thought processing, checking for mistakes, and not trying to finish every task as quickly as possible. This is something we all struggle with in society as a whole, and it definitely impacts how students perform in exams!

Please do ask any questions you may have. Anyone who’s met me knows I have no problem yapping away, and am always happy to help ♥️ or book yourself in for a few sessions too 😉

AVAILABILITY
Feeling very grateful to say that I am almost at capacity for week day afternoons and evenings now 🫶🏼 thank you ♥️ please message if interested and I will try my best to accommodate new requests 😊

Some more spaces may become available in November after resit exams.

I still have some availability during school hours, which may be suitable for students resitting in a college setting, who have study days off.

Good luck to students collecting their exam results today 🌟

Whether you walk out of your school feeling on top of world, or quietly deflated, today is just the beginning; no one’s success story is complete at age 16. Your GCSEs are now a stepping stone to the next part of your journey.

Take every opportunity you get, even if you know you don’t want it long term. You will discover something about your personality, find a potential path to pursue, figure out part of your skill set, network, or cross something off the list that you know you’re definitely not interested in. Build your social skills, improve your confidence and learn the power of a smile, good manners and empathy.

Congratulations and have fun during the last week or two of the holidays. ☀️

Who am I?!

A 36 year old mother of 2 primary-aged children, and cat mum! 👩🏻 🧒🏼 🐈 🐈‍⬛
I graduated from Loughborough University with a 1st Class Hons in 2010 and took a job in a secondary school the following day!
I have worked in various roles in schools since; qualifying as a teacher in 2012 and have found home tutoring to be a highlight of a career in education.

I believe that all children are capable of achieving in maths, and that confidence is often the biggest barrier to success, which is why positive reinforcement, genuine care and building self esteem are at the core of my teaching style. I love to see how happy students are when they achieve in maths; even when they try to hide it!

Difficulties in maths often become evident during the GCSE years, but the causes are multifaceted and usually stem from a time before the exam years. It’s a privilege as a teacher to be able to spend time 1-1 with a student to figure out the roots of their struggles in maths and help them to push past them.
