🍂 Autumn Poetry 🍂

We collected colours, adjectives and feelings about autumn and used our ideas to create free-verse poems!

It was lovely to see how each child expressed their own creativity and came up with different ideas about what autumn means to them. Some thought about foggy, damp mornings, while others imagined glowing sunsets and colourful leaves.

It was a wonderful reminder that we all see, think and learn differently, and that there is no one way to express an idea. 🍁✨

A board game with a twist! 🎲🕵️

We turned a board game into a maths mystery!

Each question answered gave us a clue, with the aim of using our four operations to work out who the guilty suspect was. A fun and interactive way to practise addition, subtraction, multiplication and division while also putting our problem-solving and reasoning skills to the test.

Maths + clues + a little detective work = a very exciting learning session! 🔎

Let’s Get Baking! 🍪

Today’s session had a little bit of everything!

We practised our CVC words and key frequency words, worked on letter formation and the alphabet, and used practical resources to help us with simple addition.

Once all that learning was done, it was time for the best part… biscuit decorating!🍪

A hands-on session filled with learning, practising new skills and, of course, a tasty treat to finish! ✨

Gardening Greatness and Dinosaur Detectives! 🌱🦖

🌱 Monday – developing fine motor skills, practising simple addition and subtraction using bugs, exploring mud and flowers through sensory play, and working on high frequency words and SATPIN sounds.

🦖 Tuesday – focusing on the au/aw sounds, hunting for dinosaur eggs and sorting the words into the correct sound. We also practised spelling, reading and writing simple sentences.

And I definitely learnt lots of new dinosaur names and facts along the way! 🦕

🌱 Learning through gardening!

We used a gardening theme to support lots of different areas of learning:

🌻 Exploring seeds while practising SATPIN sounds.
📖 Introducing high frequency words.
🐛 Counting bugs and using them practically for adding and subtracting.
🪴 Exploring mud through sensory play, discussing smell, texture and how it feels.

I love using themes and sensory activities to make learning practical, engaging and memorable! 💚

Highlights of the week!

🏴‍☠️ Pirate theme – practising ai/ay sounds using playdough to support spelling and phonics.
🧁 Cupcake theme – learning about word classes.
💙 Sonic reading board game – developing reading skills in a fun, interactive way.
🐶 Dog theme – learning split digraphs and then finding them in a text.
🏆 Our scoring game made another appearance this week, adding a bit of fun to lots of different activities!
🌱 Garden theme – practising accurate measuring, times tables and a short reading comprehension.

Ice cream is definitely a favourite! 🍦 It’s also a fantastic way to incorporate sensory play into learning.

Our focus for this Reception group was on identifying and recognising numbers, developing number bonds to 5, identifying and categorising SATPIN sounds, and practising correct letter and number formation.

🌟 Wow! What a busy first week back!🌟

We’ve welcomed back our wonderful children, as well as some new starters, and they have all done amazingly! 👏

Here’s a little look at what we’ve been working on this week:

Letter formation, followed by feeding the froggy.
Simple addition using visuals to support understanding.
Division by sharing equally.
Times tables practice.
Short division
Place value – understanding the value of each digit

🍦Today has been all about ice cream!🍦

We’ve had a fun-filled day of learning through our ice cream theme!

🔢 We practised recognising numbers to 10 and explored more than and less than.
🍨 We got creative by designing and making our own ice creams.
🔤 We practised our SATPIN sounds and sorted different phonics sounds.
🏪 We used our imaginations to create our very own ice cream café, developing our communication, teamwork and role-play skills.
➕ We were also introduced to the column method, using Base 10 equipment to help us understand addition in a practical and visual way.
