🥊 Muay Thai on home turf 🇹🇭
One thing I wanted to do while we were in Thailand was experience some Muay Thai actually in Thailand.
I’ve watched countless Muay Thai fights over the years. When I was competing, most of the shows I fought on were predominantly Muay Thai, usually with a handful of MMA bouts mixed in. The standard of Muay Thai in the UK is seriously good too, probably overlooked at times.
So I managed to convince my girlfriend to spend an evening watching fights with me and we headed to Patong Boxing Stadium in Phuket.
Was it the most “authentic” venue we could have chosen? Maybe not. But it had air con, comfy seats and a good view of the fights, so I wasn’t complaining 😂 I was there to watch Muay Thai, soak up the atmosphere and see the passion surrounding the sport on its home turf.
And that was probably what stood out most.
You could see how seriously the corner teams took their jobs, but I was particularly impressed by some of the younger fighters. Completely unfazed by the occasion. Calm under pressure, composed and seemingly oblivious to everything going on around them.
One of the female fights was a 14-year-old Thai girl against a 26-year-old from Norway, which I still find pretty mad. The younger fighter eventually lost, but the way she handled herself and the pressure of the occasion at just 14 was incredibly impressive.
The main event itself ended up being a little anticlimactic, but the final fight you see in the video produced a great finish. The red corner used his range perfectly before landing a lovely front kick to end it. 👌
After all the years of watching Muay Thai, I can finally say I’ve sat in Thailand and watched it on home turf.
Great fights, great atmosphere, and another martial arts experience ticked off the list. 🇹🇭🥊
