Knepp Castle is a shining example of what can be done on large Estates where the landowner has foresight.
In 1987, a farmer in the Sussex countryside of England began a process that would take fifteen years to become intentional and another fifteen to become famous. He stopped managing his land with the intensity that modern farming requires — stopped spraying, stopped ploughing in the same patterns, stopped fighting the natural succession that farming continuously interrupts. The land began to change. Scrub returned. Then the plants that scrub shelters. Then the insects that the plants feed. Then the birds that the insects sustain. Then larger animals following the smaller ones back into a landscape that was creating the conditions they needed without being engineered to create them. By 2022, the Knepp Estate — the farm that this process produced — had become one of the most biodiverse sites in lowland England, hosting turtle doves, purple emperor butterflies, peregrine falcons, and populations of species that had not been recorded in the region for decades.
Rewilding is not wilderness. This distinction matters. Wilderness is what exists when human activity has not significantly altered an ecosystem — a condition that applies to a shrinking fraction of the Earth's land surface. Rewilding is what happens when human activity deliberately reduces its management intensity and allows ecological processes to resume. It is not passive — it requires active decisions to stop doing things, and sometimes active decisions to reintroduce species or restore physical features like river meanders. But its character is fundamentally different from conservation management that tries to engineer a specific ecological outcome. Rewilding sets conditions and steps back. The ecosystem decides what to do with the conditions.
The farmer in the image — standing at the edge of his recovering field, uncertain whether he made the right decision — is in the position of everyone who has committed to a process whose outcome they cannot control and cannot fully predict. His neighbors think he is wasting land. His balance sheet is worse this year than last. His field has more species than it has had in forty years. These three facts coexist without resolution. The field does not know about the balance sheet. It knows about the conditions — the reduced disturbance, the returning hedgerows, the restored stream — and it is responding to them with the biological exuberance of a system that has been waiting for the pressure to ease.
The insects came back first. They always come back first — their generation times are short enough that a single season of improved conditions can produce a measurable population response. Then the birds that eat the insects. The recovery is not linear and not predictable and not photogenic in the way that conservation campaigns prefer. It is messy and provisional and slower than the loss was. But it is happening. The field is sure, even when the farmer is not.
🌿 It doesn't look like wilderness. It looks like something trying to remember what it was before we organized it into something we could extract from. The hedgerows are knee-high — young, provisional, already hosting the first returning insects. The stream meanders now where it was straightened for drainage; the gravel beds where fish spawn are coming back. The scrub at the margins is messy and essential and exactly what a recovering ecosystem looks like before it becomes what people will eventually call beautiful. The farmer stands at the edge of it, uncertain. His neighbors think he is wasting land. His balance sheet thinks the same. His field disagrees. The insects came back first. Then the birds. The field is doing what living systems do when the pressure eases — it is remembering. Slowly, messily, without asking permission. The farmer watches. He is not sure he was right. The field is sure. It has been sure since the first insect came back.
