Last night we tuned into Episode 3 of the Great British Sewing Bee live on Zoom — me and some of my lovely embroidery club ladies 💻🪡
The wrap dresses were flowing, the transformation challenge was at it's p***y best, and the coverstitch machines got their moment to shine! 🌟
Of course we were cheering for our fabulous Novello and wonderful Gaynor — both absolutely smashing it once again! 🙌💙
After seeing the contestants tackle all that stretch jersey - many using coverstitch machines for the first time - I thought I’d share some tips…
1️⃣ What is a coverstitch machine?
It's a specialist machine, predominantly used for hemming stretch fabrics and is perfect for that professional finish on knits and sportswear.
2️⃣ Thread Setup
Coverstitch machines use 3 or 4 threads — two or three needle threads, and a looper thread underneath to form a stretchy stitch.
3️⃣ Chain Stitch Magic
You can also sew chain stitches! Great for strong seams that still have a bit of give. The magic part is they can be completely removed without a seam ripper in sight! 🤩
4️⃣ It is not an Overlocker!
A coverstitch machine doesn’t trim or finish raw edges like an overlocker. It’s purely for hemming, topstitching, and creating stretch-friendly seams. You can also make belt loops and add bias tape to fabric edges in one go.
5️⃣ No Coverstitch? No Problem!
Try a twin needle on your regular machine for a similar topstitch look. However, for the ultimate stretch, a coverstitch machine is the way to go!
💡Bonus tip
If you're in the market for a coverstitch machine, find your local sewing machine dealer and have a demo. Consider a overlocker/coverstitch combi machine to save space - but get a demonstration of how to switch from one mode to the other.
