Abstract storytelling.

This is just one of the things Chelsea will be discussing at our upcoming education workshop.

Not every image at a wedding has to be on the nose or scream wedding to be valuable and interesting. There are many ways to tell a story, and it's all about finding the way that keeps you coming back for more! If you're interested in learning what makes you tick and how you can incorporate images like this into your wedding days, grab one of our 14th October tickets.

This past week has been incredibly challenging for the wedding photography industry, and I have felt its impact firsthand. Losing my Google business account, along with over ten years of five-star reviews, has been heartbreaking. Despite my ongoing appeal to regain what rightfully belongs to me, this experience has taught me something invaluable about our community: we are more powerful when we empower each other.

Yes, the loss is significant, and I won’t downplay the emotional toll it has taken. But focusing solely on the negative would be a disservice to the outpouring of support I’ve received from fellow photographers, clients, and friends in the industry. The solidarity and encouragement have been overwhelming and heartwarming.

In moments of adversity, it’s easy to feel isolated and defeated. However, the response from our community has shown me that we are not alone. The calls, messages, and shared stories of support have not only lessened the blow but have also highlighted the strength and unity within our industry.

As someone who is now also teaching wedding photography, I want to emphasize the importance of building each other up. We face enough challenges from external factors; the last thing we need is to tear each other down from within. By sharing knowledge, offering support, and celebrating each other’s successes, we create a more vibrant and resilient community.

This experience has reinforced my belief in the power of community. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out, remember that there is strength in numbers. Let’s continue to lift each other up, share our experiences, and support one another through thick and thin. - Louise

Where’s your focus?

Sometimes during weddings the magic can happen in the background. Take this shot, for example, of all the happy faces during a wedding ceremony. By composing to have our couple still in view but not the main focus, we can tell a story from the moment they were in, but may not have seen for themselves. Shifting the focus from the foreground to the background like this can really help add depth and pull viewers into a scene.

To achieve this effect, play around with out-of-focus elements in the foreground that support something of interest happening in the background.

Including compositions like these can add help add creative interest to your images and also help you tell a richer, more emotional wedding story.

It’s hard wearing all the hats as a photographer, including doing your own marketing and design. More often than not, you have to DIY everything by yourself, and it’s tough. Have you ever wondered why some homemade designs don’t look as polished? It might be because of widows, orphans, and runts! These common text issues can make your work appear messy and rushed, distracting from your stunning photos and potentially signalling a lack of attention to detail to clients. Like how a fancy restaurant’s childish menu would make you question the food quality, messy text in your designs can make potential clients doubt your professionalism. It’s a small detail, but ensuring your typography is on point can even help attract high-end clients. Swipe through our carousel to learn how to identify and fix these text mistakes.

As with all creative choices, of course, there are exceptions to the rules for runts. Sometimes, a single short word at the end of a paragraph can work if it’s part of an intentional design choice. For example, if it enhances readability, balances the layout, or draws attention to a key word. Always consider the overall balance and readability of your text, and use your judgment to decide when breaking the rules can create a unique and effective design.

I hope this helps! And let us know in the comments if you spotted all the hidden runts in the post above.

Imposter syndrome is a common challenge among creatives, including wedding photographers. Despite our hard work and dedication to mastering our craft, many of us question our abilities and fearing we don’t measure up. If you’ve ever doubted your talent or felt unworthy of your success, you’re not alone. Nearly every photographer or creative face these feelings at some point in their journey.

Remember, the feelings of doubt and inadequacy you experience are normal, but they don’t define you. Embrace your journey, celebrate your successes, and keep pushing forward. Your unique vision and skills are what make your work special, and the world deserves to see it.
