I used to view worship as the final thing. It was the thing I was striving for. The thing I thought would bring me closer to God above anything else.

But worship STARTS in the heart. Our musical worship is an expression of the love and adoration for God that already exists in our hearts.

“My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him” Psalm 28:7

We're getting ready for our first webinar training over at Worship singers - Developing singing as a skill to glorify God!

It's happening February 23rd at 7.30pm and the group voted to learn more about breathing for singing.

We'll be looking at:
- What it means to breathe efficiently for singing; What happens when we sing? Which muscles are involved?
- What do the vocal cords have to do with breathing for singing? What if we have a 'breathy' sound? - What is the correct way to breathe for singing, so we never run out of breath before we want to?

Then we'll be doing some practical work on:
- Trying out the different 'types' of breath we can use as we sing.
- Breath exercises you can use in your warm up to prepare the system, and in your practise time to develop better breath management and increase breath capacity (Sing stronger and for longer!)
- Tricky songs for breath support. Taking a song and creating a 'breath pattern' to get through it.

Do you sing worship with your church? Would you like to join a community of singers learning to develop their technique in order to sing and lead worship with more confidence?

This webinar and other teaching like it is FREE but exclusive for members of Worship singers - Developing singing as a skill to glorify God. Come on over and join us!

3 COMPONENTS OF SINGING

What would you say if I asked you what happens when you sing?

Lots of people point to their larynx (in the throat) and say their voice comes from there. But they aren’t sure HOW.

Understanding the basics of how your instrument works is fundamental. It could be the thing that turns you into a smart singer who makes actual progress in your practise time 😉

Here’s a very basic look at 3 stages (or components) of singing. It doesn’t just come from the throat - we have to acknowledge the whole system!

1. The air/breath - the power or engine behind the voice. Without efficient airflow you will run into problems....muscle tension, breathy tone, squeezed or pressed sound, trouble ascending in pitch, cracks in the voice, inflammation.....

2. The vocal cords/folds - the source of the sound. These tiny little muscle fibres resist the airflow and vibrate to create sound waves. Made up of muscle, ligament and mucosal tissue, the vocal folds stretch and lengthen and shorten and thicken retrospectively to change the pitch.

3. The vocal tract - our acoustic space for the sound waves to resonate, which produces the rounded tone that we hear. Unlike a trombone or guitar, our acoustic space is highly adaptable which gives us many many possibilities for the resulting vowel and timbre.

Each of these stages requires some work to find a balance for efficient and beautiful singing 😍

I’ve been diving back into voice study the last couple of weeks and refreshing my knowledge on anatomy and acoustics mainly.

As your voice teacher I have a responsibility to keep my knowledge and understanding of the voice fresh. It’s a good job I love to study!

As long as there is breath in my lungs, I will sing 💙🎶
