Little hands, meaningful conversations. 💚💛
Following our last post about baby signing, you might be wondering: “How do the signs work—and are they difficult to learn?”
Did you know... The Baby Sensory® Sign System draws on more than 40 years of research and exploration of signing systems used in childcare and special needs settings.
It’s designed around simple, expressive gestures and natural hand movements that babies and parents can imitate and remember. Many will already feel familiar—the everyday gestures we use to communicate basic needs. Others are adapted from established signing systems.
You don’t need to learn everything at once! Start with a few signs that fit your day, use them alongside spoken words and enjoy practising together.
One sign can also represent several related words. For example, “car” and “bus” share a sign, while “star”, “twinkle”, “shine”, “lamp”, “light” and “bright” share another. Your words and the situation help give it meaning.
Already use a different signing system? That’s welcome too—babies can become familiar with different signs used consistently by the people around them.
Our ABC Signing Book and Baby Sensory® Signbook app provide illustrated signs to explore at home, with 160 functional signs available in the app.
🍂 Looking for a little Baby Sensory® at-home idea over half term? Explore the app, choose a couple of signs and practise together during a favourite song, playtime or your everyday routines. A lovely way to keep communicating and connecting between classes!
