"We lived on the Garvaghy Road, Ballyoran Park, in the 1970's. When the houses were built and it was a new estate, there were very few Protestant families and we were all put out. As a child, aged 6 or 7 years old, I couldn't go out of our street and our house was attacked with bricks and bullets until we had to move to Craigavon. My Grandfather, a wonderful Christian man, born and bred in Portadown, was in the Orange and Black Orders and made that walk every year and would have been one of the 35 if he was alive. Where is the respect for our culture and heritage? What gives them the right to erode ours? They used intimidation and violence to put all Protestant families out in the 1970's and they are doing it again today. They talk about 28 years of intimidation, I'm talking 50 years from the Nationalist community from the estate was built. If you can use any of this please do, to help remind people of what innocent protestants also went through"

The Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland is committed to the rule of law prevailing in our land. That premise assumes that no one, regardless of their position, should be considered above the law.

The Brethren of Portadown have chosen to pursue a legal and principled approach challenging the Parades Commission's long-standing refusal to allow the completion of their traditional route.
The legal outcome, after challenges and appeals, remains that there is no lawful reason to stop the parade proceeding.

Disappointingly, nationalism and republicanism, including many individuals who hold key political offices, decided that the law is only to be adhered to and enforced when it is supporting their views.

There are now major political questions to be asked about the illegal actions and subsequent repercussions of a number of elected representives. There is no shortage of evidence of illegality, and we therefore anticipate a swift response which holds lawbreakers to account for their actions.

Whilst we acknowledge the difficult situation faced by Police; their duty is to uphold the law. If the safety of our 35 Brethren cannot be guaranteed, then PSNI need to make that clear and admit that they are unable to police the potential actions of those taking part in the illegal protest. Such a failure has echoes of the high-profile paramilitary funeral during covid and will do little to dispel the view that there are different policing approaches and decisions.

It has been encouraging to see political Unionism speak collaboratively on this matter and we trust that they will now bring collective scrutiny of the actions of others.

The events of the last 36 hours have shown that despite the warm overtures and talk of a shared future, many within political nationalism still cannot, and will not tolerate Orange and Unionist rights as a legitimate part of the cultural fabric of our shared and complex history.

GOLI Officers remain in regular communication with Portadown District and local elected representatives and will continue to offer support as required.

Portadown to Host Centenary Parade as Junior Orange Women’s Association Marks 100 Years

The Junior Orange Women’s Association of Ireland (JOWAI) will celebrate its centenary in 2027, with a major parade in Portadown on Saturday 29 May marking 100 years since the first Junior Orange warrants for girls were issued.

Portadown holds a special place in the Association’s story.

JOWAI’s beginnings can be traced to Sister Mary S.A. McDonald, a member of a Ladies’ Orange Lodge in the Portadown District, whose proposal in 1926 led to the establishment of an organisation for younger female members of the Orange tradition. The first Junior Orange warrants for girls were issued the following year.

A century later, the Association continues to grow, with recent years bringing a significant increase in membership and the formation of new lodges across the country.

That growth has introduced a new generation of girls to an organisation centred on friendship, heritage, community involvement and its enduring motto, “Truth & Loyalty.”

The Centenary Parade will bring members, supporters and friends together from across Ireland and beyond, while returning the celebrations to an area closely connected with the Association’s earliest history.

It will also recognise the generations of girls and adult members who have shaped JOWAI, together with the support of the Association of Loyal Orangewomen of Ireland, throughout its first century.

Further details of the Centenary Parade and other events planned for 2027 will be announced in the months ahead.
