Scholastic Book Fair – Saturday 18th November 2023 (Primary)

WHEN: 9:30am-12:30pm WHERE: Primary Main Hall

Our first Scholastic Book Fair of the year is here, just in time for Christmas! Last year, your support with our book fairs meant we raised enough money to re-stock all our classrooms with new dictionaries and thesauruses. This was such an achievement and has provided a new and updated vital learning resource for our children.

We hope you are able to attend our first book fair of the academic year. We are now raising money to re- stock our Library with more diverse, engaging and modern texts. This year, to make it easier, we will be using a card reader.

Please note, we are not able to accept cash. We hope to see many of you there!

WORLD NURSERY RHYME WEEK

At the Aylesbury Vale Academy Preschool, nursery rhymes are an important part of our day! But why are nursery rhymes so important in early childhood and what can Early Years educators do to ensure that traditional nursery rhymes are never forgotten?

"Experts in literacy and child development have discovered that if children know eight nursery rhymes by heart by the time they're four years old, they're usually among the best readers by the time they're eight." - Mem Fox, Reading Magic.

Nursery rhymes provide bite-sized learning opportunities for young children to develop key developmental skills and can often be the trigger for hours of creative and open-ended play. They are a powerful learning source in early literacy and enable children to become interested in the rhythm and patterns of language.

In Preschool we are so happy to be taking part in World Nursery Rhymes Week this week!

We have a rhyme a day challenge, and you can join in too! Today we are starting with Jack and Jill. You could share your singing on Evidence me!

👉 Monday 13th November: Jack and Jill
👉 Tuesday 14th November: Hickory Dickory Dock
👉 Wednesday 15th November: Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes
👉 Thursday 16th November: Row, Row, Row Your Boat
👉 Friday 17th November: The Wheels On The Bus

Anti-Bullying Week takes place between Monday 13th November and Friday 17th November. The theme this year is MAKE A NOISE! about bullying.

Throughout the week, our Primary phase whole school assembly and PSHE lessons will explore bullying – what it is, how we can MAKE A NOISE about it when it happens, and the difference between banter and bullying.

It is important to remember that there is a difference between children being unkind and children bullying. Bullying is categorised as the following:

• Repetitive
• Intentional
• Hurtful
• Imbalance of power

Don't forget Odd Socks Day tomorrow!

To celebrate the fact that we are all unique, we ask that Primary school children and grown-ups wear odd socks to school on Monday 13th November.

The day sends an important message to our pupils that they should be allowed to be themselves, free from bullying, and it helps us to launch our Anti-Bullying Week activities in a fun and positive way.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

We will be taking time to remember and reflect on those who have sacrificed themselves in order to enable us to live in our democracy on Friday 10 November.

We invite students who are members of groups such as Scouts, Cubs, Brownies, St John's Ambulance, cadets, etc., to come to school wearing their full uniforms on this day. With Primary pupils, due to this being the same day as our individual and sibling photos, we ask that children bring their club uniform into school in a named bag to change into once the photos are taken.

Virtual assemblies about Remembrance led by Rev Lane will take place in the Secondary phase, and Year 9 drama students will share a virtual performance relating to Remembrance.

We will have a minute's silence at 10.45am, followed by the laying of wreaths at the front of the school.

Poppies to commemorate Remembrance Day can be purchased from both Primary and Secondary schools. All proceeds will go to the Royal British Legion.

LET'S LEARN PHONICS - PARENT PARTNERSHIP EVENT THURSDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 5-6PM (Reception and KS1 Parents/Carers)

- Reading is part of our culture curriculum.
- Reading allows our students to dive into experiences which they would otherwise not access.
- Reading is a skill which underpins every other aspect of our curriculum.

We are keen to use reading to allow students to explore their own passions and interests as well as providing a broader experience in their taught lessons. BUT what comes first?

Quality time listening to stories and rhymes with caregivers, sharing the rich language in texts. Hearing environmental sounds, making body sounds, clapping out syllables, hearing the sounds (phonemes) in their names and moving on from the letter name.

Following on from early pre-phonics, is when they begin Read Write Inc phonics In Reception, which continues through KS1, and carries them through their Reading journey at the AVA. This is where they will start to recognise the graphemes (the written sounds).

You can find out about how your child will take their steps into independent reading and how phonics can help them to be a successful reader.

Come to our parent partnership event and join in with their learning.

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday 9th November 5-6pm in Primary hall.
