🚨 Is the EHCP system changing? And should you still apply?

There has been a lot of discussion about proposed SEND reforms recently — and understandably, many parents are worried about what this could mean for their child.

The important thing to know is this:

The current EHCP system is still in place.

If you believe your child may need an Education, Health and Care needs assessment, you can still request one.

The Government's proposed reforms are part of a longer-term programme of change. New legislation is not expected to come into effect until September 2029, and the Government has stated that there will be no changes to support received through existing EHCPs before at least September 2030.

So please don't assume that you have “missed your chance” or that there is no point starting the process now.

Every child's circumstances are different, and decisions should be based on their individual needs — not fear created by headlines.

💚 Behaviour is communication.

When a child is struggling, it can be easy to focus on the behaviour we can see.

But what if we changed the question from…

❌ “Why are they behaving like this?”

to…

💭 “What are they trying to communicate?”

Behaviour can tell us that a child is overwhelmed, anxious, frustrated, struggling with sensory demands, finding communication difficult, or simply doesn’t yet have the skills to express what they need.

Instead of only trying to stop the behaviour, we need to get curious about what’s happening underneath it.

✨ What happened before?
✨ What might the child be finding difficult?
✨ Is there an unmet need?
✨ What is the behaviour communicating?
✨ How can we adapt the environment or our response?

Understanding the why can completely change the way we support a child.

Looking beyond behaviour and supporting the individual child can be a real game changer.

💚 Understand the behaviour.

What a start back to the week!!! New term, new car, new work and life is beginning with the new addition to our family...

Work is busy, busy, busy and, since leaving schools full time, finding time to get bits 'ticked off' and strategise has been essential! I have been in a tribunal all morning and needed the break to be fair as well...

So an update on the business, and the progress we are making:

✅ SEND Tribunals by the end of this month will be three completed with two more cases in progress...
✅ Two active EHCP applications
✅ Two active DLA applications
✅ The conversations are beginning with new families on board and work ready to get started
✅ Conferences ready to attend
✅ Opportunities to develop/expand/sponsor/advertise being considered and implemented...
✅ Getting the word out there and upcoming conferences Pre Christmas ready to attend!

So busy, busy, busy... Even my social media manager had to take a break 😂😂

🏊‍♀️ Every child should have the chance to be safe in the water.

Swimming is such an important life skill — but there is a worrying gap in swimming ability between children from more and less affluent communities.

By the end of primary school, around 50% of children in more deprived areas can swim 25 metres, compared with around 80% of children in more affluent areas.

That’s a significant difference — and one that deserves more attention. 💭

Swimming isn’t just about sport. It’s about water safety, confidence and potentially saving a life.

So what can we do?

Is swimming something we should be talking about more when we talk about inclusion and equality in primary education?

When is the right time to get help? ❤️

I recently watched a Channel 4 documentary focusing on children and mental health which highlighted something we can’t afford to ignore: children need the right support, at the right time — before things reach crisis point.

As parents, carers and professionals, it can be incredibly difficult to know whether what we're seeing is a phase, something they’ll grow out of, or a sign that they need additional support.

Early support can make such a difference. Listening without judgement, recognising changes in behaviour, understanding what might be behind those changes and knowing where to turn can all help a child feel heard and supported.

💬 Your child doesn’t have to be at breaking point before their mental health matters.

I believe in early identification, understanding the whole child and helping families navigate the support available.

Let’s keep talking about children’s mental health — not just when things reach crisis point, but throughout their journey. 💗
