As part of our OPAL Community Interest Company project, we’re transforming spaces around school into exciting, imaginative places for our children to play, explore and get creative. 🌳🪣🪵✨

🧠 What does the UK's Independent Review into Mental Health Conditions tell us?

In June 2026, the Government published an update to its Independent Review into Mental Health Conditions, ADHD and Autism. The review highlights a significant rise in common mental health conditions, particularly anxiety and depression, with the biggest increases seen in children, young people and younger adults.

The review also makes it clear that rising demand is not caused by one single factor. Instead, it points to a combination of influences including:

💙 Social and economic pressures
💙 Better awareness and reduced stigma
💙 Improved recognition and diagnosis
💙 Greater willingness to seek help and support.

For schools, this reinforces the importance of:
✔️ Early identification of needs
✔️ Timely access to appropriate support
✔️ Strong partnerships between education, health services and families
✔️ A whole-school approach to promoting positive mental health.

Every child deserves to feel understood, supported and able to thrive. By working together, we can create environments where mental wellbeing is prioritised alongside learning.

💙 What are Inclusion Bases... and why do they matter?

Inclusion Bases are specialist provisions within mainstream schools that provide targeted support for children with additional needs while helping them remain part of their school community.

When they are well planned and properly resourced, Inclusion Bases can offer:
✨ Individualised support tailored to a child's needs.
🏫 Opportunities to access mainstream learning where appropriate.
🤝 A sense of belonging and meaningful relationships with peers.
🌱 A nurturing environment that builds confidence, independence and emotional wellbeing.
📚 Access to specialist staff, strategies and interventions.

It's important to remember that every Inclusion Base is different, and the level of support, admission criteria and approach will vary from school to school.

As an advocate for young people, parent and someone who is deeply passionate about children's mental health, it breaks my heart to see so many families waiting far too long for the support they need.

With CAMHS services under immense pressure and the Right to Choose pathway now closed until April 2027, many parents are left feeling worried, overwhelmed, and unsure where to turn.

If this is your family, I want you to know that you don't have to navigate it alone.

While I can't replace specialist mental health services, I can provide compassionate support, practical strategies, and advocacy to help you understand your child's needs, work alongside their school, and support your family while you wait for specialist input.

Every young person deserves to feel heard, understood, and supported, and every parent deserves someone in their corner too.

An Educational Psychologist's report isn't optional during an EHCP needs assessment.

I've spoken parents who have been told that existing school reports are enough, or that an Educational Psychologist doesn't need to assess their child. This can leave families feeling confused and unsure of what they're entitled to.

If your child is undergoing an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment, it's important to know that educational psychology advice forms part of the statutory advice that should be obtained. Where appropriate, a face-to-face assessment can provide valuable insight into your child's strengths, needs, and the support they require.

If you feel a face-to-face assessment is needed, don't be afraid to ask questions and advocate for your child. Explain why you believe it is important, provide examples of the difficulties your child experiences, and ask the local authority to explain the reasons if an assessment is not being carried out.

Every child deserves to have their needs fully understood, and every parent deserves clear information about the process.

** Under the law in England, the local authority is generally required to seek educational psychology advice as part of an EHC needs assessment, but in some circumstances it may rely on existing advice if it is recent and the original author, the local authority, and the child's parent or young person all agree that new advice is unnecessary.
