It is with great sadness that the St. Patrick’s Primary School family has learned of the passing of our former Principal, Mr Jim Maxwell, whose visionary leadership shaped our school from 1971 until his retirement in June 1990.
For two decades, he led St. Patrick’s with remarkable intellect, unwavering dedication, and a deep belief in the transformative power of education. A true pioneer, he was always looking ahead - embracing new initiatives, drawing upon the very best educational research, and ensuring that our pupils benefited from an education that was progressive, enriching, and forward-thinking. He was a strong advocate for co-education, believing wholeheartedly that boys and girls learning together brought out the very best in one another
An avid reader of literature and poetry himself, he inspired generations of children to develop a love of reading. His vision brought the much-loved Book Fair to St. Patrick’s and established the connection with the Queen’s University Belfast Bookshop.
During the challenging decades of the 1970s and 1980s, amid social unrest and uncertainty, he remained steadfast in his conviction that education was the pathway to hope, understanding, and a brighter future for every child.
He was a man of deep faith and devotion whose family was always at the heart of his life, values that he ensured the boys and girls of our school experienced each day.
Even long after his retirement, he continued to follow the achievements of our pupils through newspapers and the media, taking immense pride in their successes and in the school that remained so close to his heart. His love for St. Patrick’s endured throughout his life.
His influence reaches far beyond the years he devoted as the longest-serving Principal in our history. He leaves behind a legacy of educational excellence, innovation, faith, and care that continues to shape our school today. He was not simply part of the history of St. Patrick’s; he helped write one of its most significant chapters.
On behalf of our past and present staff, Board of Governors and entire school community, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones. May they find comfort in knowing the profound and lasting impact he had on countless lives.
May he rest in peace.

On Sunday 26th July from 5.00pm to 7.00pm
Funeral on Monday in St Patrick’s Cathedral at 11.00am,
Burial afterwards in St Patrick's Cemetery.
