🎨 Another creative week in the art room! 🎨
Our students have been busy exploring a range of artistic techniques and styles this week. Some students created beautiful animal-themed relief prints, carefully designing and carving their images into printing blocks before using ink rollers and brayers to transfer their designs onto paper. It was wonderful to see the excitement as each unique print was revealed!
Other students focused on drawing and painting projects, developing their skills in colour, shading, and composition, while some explored the vibrant world of name graffiti, experimenting with lettering styles and creative designs to express their individuality.
We are so proud of the creativity, patience, and effort our students have shown. Every piece reflects their imagination and growing artistic confidence. Well done, everyone! 👏🖌️🎨

When one of your PDA students needs to complete their photography task even though its very wet and windy, you get your waterproofs on and get stuck in. A very wet but productive day at Baslow Edge today. These are my pictures, our students were so much better!!

Our new lights are up in Cromford. Metre wide led halos which illuminate the ceiling but cast very little shadow on the floor to minimise visual differences. They look absolutely stunning! I cant wait for students to see the building.

And just like that one of our rooms is nearly ready. This is going to be our therapy room for activities such as speech therapy and Thrive. Our amazing HLTA Lucie, is currently completing her Level 5 Apprenticeship in the Thrive Approach which will help us to assess pupils’ social and emotional skills, create targeted action plans to support mental health and track progress over time.

Alternative provision is often misunderstood as “where the naughty kids go.” In reality, most of the young people we work with are far from naughty. Many are anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally exhausted, or carrying the impact of being let down by systems that were supposed to support them. For some, school has become a place of fear rather than safety — and alternative provision gives them the chance to rebuild trust, confidence and belief in themselves.
This week, one of our students has been sitting her Functional Skills exams. She’s been incredibly nervous, so we supported her the alternative provision way — by putting relationships, nurture and individual needs first.
She chose her exam times: 1:05pm and 10:10am, because starting exactly “on the hour” made her anxious. She completed the exams in my office because classrooms felt too much like school. She wasn’t keen on the “Exam in Progress” sign or handing in her phone, but because she had control and trust in other areas, she was able to manage those parts too.
On the way to the exam, we became her personal cheering squad to make her laugh and ease the nerves. And afterwards? An iced coffee made by one of the team and another round of cheers.
What we do isn’t complicated or revolutionary — it’s the small things, the understanding, the flexibility and the relationships that make the difference.
This young person is now one step closer to college after missing so much time in education, and we couldn’t be prouder.
A huge well done to the whole team for showing the power of nurture, patience and truly personalised support. ❤️
