Alderley Edge School for Girls is looking to strengthen their Board of Governors and is recruiting for new Governors. As a trustee your role will be to determine the overall direction and development of the school through good governance and clear strategic planning, ensure that the School meets its statutory and charitable obligations and work closely and support the Headmistress and Senior Leadership Team.
In terms of commitment, Governors usually attend around six Full Board meetings per year, as well as sub-committee meetings. Although becoming a Governor requires drive and commitment, you will enjoy many professional and personal rewards, including the chance to support young people’s futures.

Last week, we welcomed Alex Barrie (Alumni 2008) back to AESG to talk to the girls about her career in Law. Alex, who is a former AESG Head Girl, is now an Associate at Clyde & Co. in Manchester and works in clinical negligence. Alex explained the different routes into Law and talked about how hugely important work experience is. She also talked to the girls in general about perseverance and resilience and explained if things don’t always go to plan keep focused, as with determination you will get there in the end.
She explained the demands of a career in Law and how she juggles 50 to 100 cases at any one time as well as a family and making time for herself. She really was in inspiration to all the girls, thank you Alex for giving up your time to come and talk to us.
Our Careers Lunch & Learn talks are a wonderful way to connect our Alumnae with our current pupils so that they can learn about future careers and gain a first hand insight into the varied ways in which they can get on the first rung of the ladder.

✨Five minutes with Heather✨
It’s been fascinating to chat to Heather and hear about her time at Mount Carmel and how it has influenced her working at AESG today!
1. Who was your favourite teacher when at Mount Carmel and why?
I was at Mount Carmel, in the senior school and my favourite teacher/Nun was Sister Gerard, she was so kind and understanding and always had a hug for the girls, especially those who were struggling.
2. What’s your favourite memory?
My favourite memories of Mount Carmel are from the PE hall now the junior gym. My sport was gymnastics and I spent every minute I could practicing. I used to spend hours in lunch breaks and after school practicing my tumbling down the mats in that gym - round off, flick flack, flick flack, flick flack!!!! When I saw the junior gym on my return, I wished I was 12 again so that I could have another go.
3. What advice would you pass on to the current girls now that you have gone all the way through.
Have confidence in your own ability, never give up on your dream and never be afraid to ask if you don't understand a subject. I found that often if something was explained twice or in a slightly different way, the pieces fell into place and everything became clear.
4. What’s your role in school and what was it like coming back to work here?
I have been the Junior School Secretary since Jan 2022 and it was wonderful stepping back into my old school. Lots of funny memories popped back into my head, like sitting on the huge hot classroom radiator's on a cold frosty morning trying to get warm. It was so good to come to work in a school which was already so familiar, it was that bit easier to find my way around. Funnily, I am still opening new doors and thinking 'this used to be my old Latin classroom'

Thank you to Cjay and Lizzie, both AESG Alumni, who visited school yesterday to talk to the girls about their careers and working in the Mental Health sector. Both girls left AESG to study Psychology at University. Cjay’s path led her to then study a Forensic Psychology Master’s Degree followed by a career working within the prison service as a Drug and Alcohol Recovery Specialist, while Lizzie went on to study Mental Health Nursing and now works in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit.
Lizzie and Cjay both shared their experiences of working within the Mental Health sector, the daily challenges the job brings and the incredibly rewarding moments they both enjoy as the see they positive impact they make on people’s lives.
The girls attending the talk asked some big questions such as “Can anyone really be rehabilitated?” and “What is the cause for someone to go down a path of crime and drug dependency?”. It was a fascinating insight into the lives of the people who use this service and the path to rehabilitation.
We are always looking for alumni to share their career stories with our pupils and inspire the next generation! Please email [email protected] if you can help. Thank you.

Welcome to our new Alumnae 'Five Minutes With.." feature. Today, we have Five Minutes with Amanda Dean who went to St Hilary's and is now our Admissions Officer here at AESG! It's been fascinating to hear Amanda's tales while she was at St Hiliary's.
1. Who was your favourite teacher when at Mount Carmel / AESG / St Hilary’s and why?
I had lots of favourite teachers at St Hilary's, but Mrs Straw, who was our Divinity teacher in Senior School and the Deputy Head of school (she was also Deputy Head at AESG, when the schools first merged) taught us a great lesson in life, if you respect people and work hard you will be respected yourself and go far. We always had such fun in her lessons and she got the results needed, but you didn't cross the line!
2. • What’s your favourite memory?
My favourite memories are being part of the music department and performing in school plays. Also being the youngest House Captain of Stuart House and Being Head of Choir in Sixth Form. When I first went to St Hilary's our Headmistress, Miss Kingsey, wore her black gown everywhere, she was terrifying, we had to courtesy whenever we saw her. Walking down in a crocodile line through the village to church once a term was always something people in the village would come out to see.
3.• What advice would you pass on to the current girls now that you have gone all the way through?
My advice would be to enjoy your school life, join in as many activities as you can and don't miss out on opportunities given to you.
4. • What’s your role in school and what was it like coming back to work here?
I have worked here for 19 years, I started running the Uniform Shop and then worked part time in Finance as well. Then 18 months ago I was appointed as the Admissions Officer. I was also a parent here for 15 years, and in between leaving as a student and being a parent, I was on the Old Girls committee, so I feel I have never really left. The hardest thing I found coming to work back at school, was going into the staff room!!
