🌟 **We’re hiring! Teaching Assistant – St Michael’s School, Aldbourne, Wiltshire**🌟

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, caring and creative Teaching Assistant to join our friendly team on a 1-year fixed-term contract.

This is a lovely opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting children’s learning, confidence and wellbeing. Experience of working with children or supporting children with SEND would be an advantage, but isn’t essential.

What does the first week in Reception really need to look like?

There can be a lot of pressure at the start of a new school year.

New children arrive and we can feel the need to get straight into routines, phonics, maths, writing and all the things we know we need to teach.

But what if, in that first week, our most important job is something much simpler?

Helping children to feel happy, safe and secure.

For a new Reception child, everything is new. New adults. New friends. New spaces. New expectations. Sometimes even a new experience of being away from home.

Before we can expect children to learn, explore and become independent, they need to know:

“I am safe here.”
“These adults know me.”
“I belong here.”
“I can have a go.”

What happens when children leave Reception?

For many children, the answer is:

Suddenly, the environment changes.

The opportunities for exploration reduce.

The timetable becomes more formal.

And play can disappear.

But children don't suddenly stop needing to talk, explore, practise, collaborate, make mistakes, solve problems and make sense of the world because they have turned five.

That's why we believe Continuous Provision has a place all the way through Year 1 and Year 2.

The provision changes.

The expectations change.

The level of challenge changes.

But the fundamental principle remains:

Children need opportunities to actively use what they know.

It's probably one of the questions we hear most often.

Phonics. Maths. Writing. Reading. Foundation subjects. PE. RE.

And then there's play.

The answer isn't to squeeze more into the timetable.

It's to think differently about what happens within the timetable.

Children have opportunities to revisit, practise, apply and deepen what they've been taught — while developing independence, language, problem-solving, collaboration and executive function.

September is coming. New children. New classes. New routines. New relationships.

And amongst all the planning, timetabling and preparation, there can be a temptation to think:

“How quickly can we get started?”

But what if September isn't about rushing to fit everything in?

What if the most important thing we can do first is build relationships, establish trust and get to know the children in front of us?

At our Continuous Provision Showcase this October https://www.stmichaelsaldbourne.co.uk/continuous-provision-in-key-stage-1-courses/ we'll explore how carefully designed provision can support children to settle, connect, become independent and learn — not just in September, but throughout the year.

Because sometimes, slowing down helps children go further later.

Please don't spend your summer holidays setting up your classroom. You don't need to spend hours creating a Pinterest-perfect classroom.

Continuous Provision isn't about having hundreds of resources, beautifully curated areas or changing your classroom every week.

To us, continuous means consistent.

Children need to know where things are, how they work and what they can do with them. That means selecting a small number of high-quality, open-ended resources and using them consistently.

Rather than constantly introducing something new, we can:

🧱 model how to use resources well
đź’¬ model the language that goes with them
🔄 revisit and repeat
đź‘€ observe how children use what we've taught
✨ add resources with purpose when they are needed
