What does it take to complete a 107-mile ultramarathon with more than 16,000 feet of elevation gain and then show up for a nursing skills validation the very next day?

Just ask Northern nursing student Jackson Harrison.

A former Northern cross country and track student-athlete, Jackson recently completed the Black Hills 100, finishing 107 miles in 31 hours. The experience tested his endurance, determination and mental toughness — qualities he says also help him succeed in Northern's nursing program.

"If I was prone to quitting, this wouldn't be a feasible major," Jackson said. "When it's hard, you still have to put your foot forward and complete it."

Jackson, who previously earned a bachelor’s degree in biology and an associate degree in biotechnology at Northern, chose to return for nursing because of the profession's versatility and opportunity to make a difference. He hopes to one day work in an intensive care unit.

He credits Northern's close-knit environment and supportive faculty for helping him thrive, saying the one-on-one relationships with professors and classmates have made the experience especially rewarding.

Whether he's tackling 107 miles on the trail or preparing for a career in health care, Jackson continues to prove that perseverance can take you farther than you ever imagined.
