Aberdeen Medical Humanities Society is proud to host a Chaplain Night this Tues, 12th March at 6-7pm ✨ We’ll hear from Gillian Douglas, Lead Chaplain at ARI. Her talk will cover:

1. Spiritual Care - The who, what and why?
2. Chaplains - who are we, how we become chaplains, our backgrounds
3. How to make a referral
4. Examples of our work - how we can support patients, staff, students, others in a healthcare setting

As many of us will refer a patient to a chaplain at some point in their care, this is a great opportunity to hear more about their work. Hope to see you there!

A fabric womb made by Angélique du Coudray, a French midwife who was commissioned by King Louis XV to reduce infant mortality. From 1760 to 1783, she traveled all over France, visiting poor rural women and sharing her extensive knowledge with them. It is estimated that she trained some 10,000 women.
Du Coudray also invented the first lifesize obstetrical mannequin, for practicing mock births, and published a well-received midwifery textbook

📚 Book of the Week 📚

An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action in the Twenty-first Century
James Orbinski

“Humanitarianism is about more than medical efficiency or technical competence. In its first moment, in its sacred present, humanitarianism seeks to relieve the immediacy of suffering, and most especially of suffering alone”

This book highlights past and present humanitarian concerns. It is written by the former president of Doctor's Without Borders. An Imperfect Offering is a deeply personal, deeply political book. With unstinting candor, Orbinski explores the nature of humanitarian action in the twenty-first century, and asserts the fundamental imperative of seeing as human those whose political systems have most brutally failed. He insists that in responding to the suffering of others, we must never lose sight of the dignity of those being helped or deny them the right to act as agents in their own lives. He takes readers on a journey to some of the darkest places of our history but finds there unimaginable acts of courage and empathy. Here he is doctor as witness, recording voices that must be heard around the world; calling on others to meet their responsibility.
