🌍 Different campuses, cultures, and languages… yet one shared European dynamic 🇪🇺

✨On the occasion of Europe Day, here is a glimpse of the 9 campuses of the European University of Technology (EUt+) alliance, working together every day to shape an open, collaborative, and innovation-driven European university.

A diversity of places and talents coming together to build the projects and experiences of tomorrow ✨

☑️ As part of the EUT+ Troyes Week, a conference open to all took place on Tuesday, featuring Enrico Balli (Università degli Studi di Parma, European Citizen Science Association), on the topic: “The Fifth Freedom: Leveraging Citizen Science for a Resilient European Research Area.”

👥 He opened the session with a striking observation: in 2004, 51% of the world’s population lived under democratic systems, compared to only 28% in 2024. This trend set the stage for a broader reflection on the evolving relationship between science, society, and democracy.

🔎 In the context of the upcoming 2026 European Research Area (ERA) Act, the “fifth freedom” — the free circulation of knowledge — is evolving from a political ambition into a fundamental legal principle. This shift implies a profound transformation in the relationship between science and society.

Enrico M. Balli highlighted how citizen science can play a key role in this transformation. Beyond participation, it invites a more transparent and humble approach to research, acknowledging the values that shape scientific questions and opening the production of knowledge to society.

Several key ideas emerged from the discussion :
🔹 citizen science as a driver of responsible research and innovation (RRI) and Open Science
🔹 the importance of “cognitive justice”, recognizing the value of knowledge from non-academic actors
🔹 “epistemic diversity” to enrich research and anticipate unintended consequences
🔹 “social robustness”: research developed with public involvement is more likely to be accepted by society
🔹 trust in science built through transparency and engagement

💫 The conference also addressed broader global dynamics, from technological transformations to Europe’s position in a changing world. In this context, strengthening the link between science and society appears as a key lever for resilience.

With the ERA Act expected to mark a turning point — moving from voluntary cooperation to a more binding framework — citizen engagement in research is no longer a “nice to have”, but increasingly becoming a structural requirement.

📍 [The EUT+ Troyes Week officially kicked off with an opening ceremony bringing together partners from across Europe]

👥 Participants were welcomed by Pr. Christophe COLLET, President of UTT, followed by Jérôme Plain, Vice-President, who introduced the DonUTT initiative — an innovative sustainability framework inspired by Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics. As both a governance and pedagogical tool, DonUTT helps assess environmental and social impacts, define priorities, and guide the university’s long-term ecological and societal transformation.

👥 Farouk Yalaoui, Vice-President for Research, then shared an overview of current collaborations, active European research institutes within EUT+, and future ambitions for research across the alliance.

🔎 The session concluded with a presentation and feedback on the EUT+ midterm report, following its review by experts in Brussels, along with practical information and a cultural introduction to French heritage and gastronomy.

📍 From March 16 to 20, EUT+ partners are gathering for a week of collaborative work, with a strong focus on research, alongside key themes such as sustainable development and social responsibility (DDRS), digital technologies, and TEDS.

🔸 This week contributes to shaping the strategy for the next phase of the “EUT+ Accelerate” program, aligning with expected KPIs and reinforcing EUT+’s long-term transformation. It also supports the alliance’s contribution to the European Research Area (ERA) and the European Higher Education Area (EEA).

🔸 Key priorities include strengthening the societal impact of research, deepening collaboration with non-academic partners and civil society, and fostering interdisciplinary and intersectoral approaches to research.

👥 🌏 [“A peace and democracy project” - Students of the European University of Technology (EUT+) debate the “Green Deal” as members of the European Parliament in a simulation game]

Europe has come to a crossroads and is currently experiencing the biggest crisis since the end of World War 2.

Anti-democratic parties are gaining popularity, and politically motivated crimes are on the rise. In times like these, teaching people about democracy is particularly important.

🤝 🔎 The “European University of Technology” (EUT+), which convened on the campus of Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (h_da) from 3 to 6 June for a working meeting, is also staying abreast of this development: on one of the days, almost 40 students from France, Cyprus and Germany debated the European “Green Deal” as MEPs in a simulation game.
