Coral reefs do not just shelter fish and marine life. 🪸 They also host extraordinary microbial worlds!đź¦
HFSP-supported researchers mapped coral microbiomes across 99 Pacific reefs and found hundreds of previously undescribed microbial species with remarkable biosynthetic potential.
These microbes may hold clues for future medicines and biotechnologies, reminding us that protecting reefs also means preserving an irreplaceable reservoir of molecular diversity!

🧬 Some genes control many different processes in the body, and scientists long thought they were too constrained to evolve.
But new HFSP-supported research suggests otherwise.
By analyzing millions of genes across more than 100 fish species, researchers found that even these “multi-tasking” genes can undergo adaptive changes.
This challenges a long-standing idea in evolutionary biology and shows how large-scale data can reveal surprising patterns in how life evolves.

🧠How does the brain know whether to move forward or turn?
HFSP-supported researchers studied zebrafish and discovered that their brains organize sensory signals relative to the body’s center. Signals pointing toward the center and away from it are processed differently and routed to distinct motor circuits. This simple “body-centered map” helps transform complex sensory input into the right action.
