My favorite thing about learning native names for anything geography related is how literal they are. Just people describing the big thing where they live.

It's all so wonderfully mundane and humbling to think about how many millions lived around these places and saw something similar to what I have seen there. To sit and share a meal with someone on the beach of one of these lakes from hundreds or thousands of years ago.

What hubris to believe we could or should ever dispossess them.
