Why are the French obsessed with animals in their language?

If you translate French idioms literally, you’ll quickly realize we sound completely crazy. 🤪

Textbook French teaches you the vocabulary, but the real French language is a wild jungle!

Here are 3 hilarious animal expressions you need to know to understand natives:

1. "Poser un lapin" (= To place a rabbit)
What it sounds like: Gently putting a bunny on a table.
What it actually means: To stand someone up! If a friend doesn't show up to your coffee date, they "placed a rabbit" on you.
💬 "I waited for him for an hour, but he posed me a rabbit."

2. "Devenir chèvre" (= To become a goat)
What it sounds like: You're turning into a farm animal.
What it actually means: To lose your mind or get extremely driven crazy by a frustrating situation.
💬 "This long administrative form is making me become a goat!"

3. "Avoir un chat dans la gorge" (= To have a cat in your throat)
What it sounds like: A very painful and furry situation.
What it actually means: To have a frog in your throat (being unable to speak clearly or coughing).
💬 "Sorry, I need some water, I have a cat in my throat!"

Stop rolling your French "R"!

Let’s be honest: the French "R" can feel like the ultimate boss battle when you're learning the language.

A lot of English speakers instinctively roll it like in Spanish or over-pronounce it like a pirate. But the secret to a perfect, natural French "R" is actually much softer... and it all happens in the back of your throat!

The Allez Hop! Quick Tip:

Think of it as a soft gargle, or like a cat purring. Your tongue should stay down, resting behind your lower teeth.

Practice right now with these three words:
- Rue (= Street)
- Rouge (= Red)
- Paris (No "Pear-iss" allowed! 😉)
