The project ASHIPUM explores how and where medicine was practiced in ancient Mesopotamia.

The case study is represented by the archives of two families of āšipus (exorcist-healers) discovered in the site of Uruk (Warqa, modern Iraq) in the Late-Babylonian period (5th-3rd century BCE).
These archives preserve a remarkable group of medical texts and come from a well-documented archaeological context.
By combining textual and archaeological evidence, the aim is to reconstruct what these healers actually knew and did in practice.
