Meet Honoré de Balzac. Unlike his predecessor Socrates, whose portrait I've recently completed, he's too young to have yet read Portraits from Paris, parts of which I wrote in Balzac's garden in Passy. But he likes to pose as Manet's La Dame aux éventails, which is in the Musée d'Orsay. He has a Parisian sensibility.

A little light reading before a leisurely lunch at the legendary Train Bleu. (Portraits from Paris is touring the City of Light.)

As Socrates here (2004-2025) observed, humans tend to feel the need to keep busy: to work, to create. Cats don't. They're content to be.

Don't miss our current , 'Paris Paintings' by Gavin Cologne-Brookes
Paris Paintings is inspired by writer and artist Gavin Cologne-Brookes' time in the French capital. Much of this collection is set in art museums, especially the Louvre, offering meditations on the relationship between art and reality. Others are based on his discoveries whilst travelling around the city on public transport, foot or by bike. Over the five years he lived abroad, whilst observing the everyday life of Parisians, Gavin also wrote a memoir, Portraits from Paris: School and Travel Remembered from the City of Light.
Showing in The White Horse Gallery until 30th March during bookshop opening hours.
We look forward to seeing you!
