🌍✨ And just like that... 1️⃣0️⃣ years of EuroSurg have gone by!
We were very proud to celebrate a decade of collaborative surgical research, led by medical students and trainees, where everything started - Tripartite Colorectal Meeting 2025.
Our celebratory session was privileged to host two distinguished speakers who have been instrumental in our history and stand as key figures in the field of collaborative research:
🔑 Professor Dmitri Nepogodiev enlightened us on “The EuroSurg Story - Building Evidence Together”;
🔑 Doctor Miguel Cunha () guided us through “Building the Surgeon of Tomorrow - Why Research Matters”.
Our sincere thanks to for consistently nurturing an environment where we can continue to grow and thrive.
To our guest speakers and attendees who walked through the “Past, Present and Future” with us - your presence gave this session meaning.
Finally, to all medical students and trainees interested in collaborative research:
⚠️ the EuroSurg Steering Committee is recruiting!
Are you ready to build the next 10 years of EuroSurg with us?

We are thrilled to announce that COMPASS🧭 has been published in the BJS! http://doi.org/10.1093/bjs/znac069
Drains are controversial in colorectal surgery: COMPASS explored the international variation in drain placement and the safety of this practice
Here is what we found:
COMPASS recruited 1805 patients from 22 countries 🌐
Despite guidelines against their use, drain placement remains very widespread (51.9%)❌
After propensity score matching, we found:
- no clinical benefits❌
- prolonged length of stay📈
- more skin infections🦠
associated with drain placement
In summary, this large international cohort study showed:
- many surgeons still use drains❌
- no evidence of clinical benefit with drain use❌
- drains may cause harm🤒
Next step?🧭
- stop drains!
