Last night we got together with Fellows from and French students for a tasting of the 2022 Beaujolais nouveau led by 🍷🍇

Made from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France, Beaujolais nouveau is a “vin de primeur,” or early wine. The wine is fermented for just a few weeks after harvest before being released on the third Thursday of November for a celebration known around the world as Beaujolais Day.

In addition to tasting this year’s wine, we also had the opportunity to learn about the history and geography of the Beaujolais region and how to best pair the wine with sausage and cheese. A few other Beaujolais wines were also served, including a white Beaujolais and a Morgon, one of the ten vintages produced in the Beaujolais region.

Last Friday students had the honor to visit the French Sénat, located near Reid Hall at the Palais du Luxembourg 🇫🇷

Guided by Prof. Mehdi Benhabri, who taught one of our joint seminars with NCEP this semester, students visited many of the historical rooms of the palace including the library, Salle de Conférences, and the Salle du livre d’or, the only room preserved in its original 17th century state. During a break in deliberations, students also had the rare opportunity to visit the hemicycle of the palace, where Senate sessions are held.

Following the visit, students met with Senator Yan Chantrel, who represents French citizens living overseas, for a discussion on the role of the Senate in France and differences with the US.

Students in City Diplomacy and The Age of Enlightenment went on a joint excursion to the Centre des arts d’Enghien-les-Bains and the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau before vacation!

At the Centre des arts d’Enghien-les-Bains, students toured the different spaces of the center and learned more about its ambition of promoting new art forms and technology in the artistic sphere, followed by a guided visit of of the recently opened exhibition “Prométhée, le Jour d’Après” by curator Emmanuel Cuisinier. We were then joined by artists in residence for a special avant-première performance of the “The Live Drawing Project.”

Located in nearby Montmorency, the Musée Jean-Jacques Rousseau is housed in the home of the famous writer. Moving there in 1756 to escape the noise of Paris, Rousseau wrote a number of his most famous works while residing there, including “Du Contrat Social,” until he was forced to flee France in 1762 following the condamnation of his book “Emile.” Today the museum preserves artefacts used by the writer and offers visits exploring his work.

Before leaving on vacation, our students visited the exhibition “Rosa Bonheur (1882-1889)”, which opened this week at !

Guided by Columbia in Paris professor Nicolas Baudouin, students discovered over 200 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs by the visionary artist after visiting her home in Thomery and “The Redemption of Rosa Bonheur” talk at

Join us tonight for a conversation by Leïla Jarbouai, Chief Curator of the Musée d’Orsay, and journalist Elaine Sciolino on the revolutionary artist Rosa Bonheur.

The visionary artist and feminist is the subject of a major retrospective at the Musée d’Orsay this fall in celebration of the bicentenary of her birth. Our Fall 2022 cohort will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition as well as the Château Musée Rosa Bonheur in Thomery, where the artist lived for almost half a century.

The walking tour focused on the history of Black artists, politicians, and intellectuals of the Left Bank, bringing special attention to monuments like the Panthéon and the slavery memorial in the Luxembourg Gardens.
