Welcome to La Fuente Academy, where we offer comprehensive introductory and advanced lessons for all instruments within the Mariachi genre.

Our programs, available both online and in person, are led by experienced educators with a deep understanding of Mariachi. Our curriculum encompasses fundamental music principles, music theory, instrument maintenance, Mariachi history, insights into renowned artists, and a deep dive into the Mariachi repertoire. Students don't just learn music; they undergo a multicultural immersion through the vibrant world of Mariachi.

🎂 Hoy celebramos a Consuelo Velázquez. 🌹🎶

A classically trained pianist. A composer whose music traveled across languages, genres, borders, and generations. And the woman behind one of the most recognized songs in the world, Bésame Mucho.

Today, on her birthday, I’m so excited to begin a new chapter of the La Fuente Artist Series—a series dedicated to discovering the people, stories, history, and humanity behind the music we carry forward.

And I couldn’t think of a better way to begin than by making Consuelo’s edition completely FREE for educators, in English and Spanish. ❤️

Because preserving our music means more than teaching the notes. It means remembering the people who gave those notes a story—and passing those stories on to the next generation.

Anyone else have this problem? 👀… Asking for a friend. 🤭🎶

I know I’ve been there! Sometimes the hardest part of growing as a musician is realizing that the things we struggle with are often the very things we need to practice.

Breaking old habits isn’t always easy—and learning to work with a metronome can definitely feel uncomfortable at first. 😅 But that discomfort can open the door to better rhythm, stronger musicianship, and a whole lot more confidence.

You don’t have to be good at something before you practice it.

Sometimes you practice it because you’re not good at it yet. ❤️🎶

Okay, musicians… be honest. Who else has argued with the metronome? 😂🙋‍♀️

Throwback Thursday — 2012 🎶✨

Never did I think receiving a call from my friend Sandra would take me on such an unexpected adventure.

At the time, I was focusing mostly on teaching. My mariachi program was growing, my schedule was hectic, and performing had taken a bit of a back seat.

Then Sandra called: “Hey, you play harp. They’re looking for a harpist…”

So I said yes. 😂

Next thing I knew, I was headed to Newark to accompany my now little buddy Sebastián de la Cruz, El Charro de Oro, on America’s Got Talent.

On LIVE television. 😳

I was a nervous wreck! I remember thinking, Please don’t faint. If you faint, the whole country is going to see it. 😂

Thankfully, I stayed upright—and that one “yes” turned into so much more than a performance.

I met wonderful musicians, formed lifelong friendships with Sebastián and his family, and somehow squeezed in an entire New York adventure: visiting Ground Zero, Times Square, pizza in Little Italy, seeing Ricky Martin in Evita on Broadway…and attempting our best New York:

“HEY, I’M WALKIN’ HERE!” 🗽😂

We were much too Texan to pull that one off.

Looking back, the greatest part wasn’t the television appearance.

It was everything that came from saying yes.

The friendships. The memories. The adventure.

Sometimes you have no idea where one little “yes” might take you. ❤️🎶

🪉 Story Time!

One of my favorite parts of this series has been reading your comments and questions ! 💖

This week’s Harp Tip Tuesday was inspired by a wonderful question from about my guiding string colors . What started as a simple answer turned into one of my favorite stories—a happy little accident that reminded me how often we grow by adapting to the unexpected. 🤗

Sometimes the things that seem unusual at first end up becoming second nature… and sometimes they even become part of your musical identity.

Thank you to everyone who has been asking questions, sharing your experiences, and cheering this series on. Your curiosity helps shape these videos, and I hope they make the harp feel just a little more approachable, one story at a time.

Every stage has its challenges. 🎻✨

Whether it’s your first performance or your hundredth, that little voice of doubt somehow finds its way backstage.

“What if I mess up?”

“What if I’m not good enough?”

“What if everyone notices my mistakes?”

The truth is…

I’ve been performing for nearly 30 years, and those thoughts still visit me from time to time.

The difference isn’t that they’ve disappeared.

The difference is that I’ve learned not to let them have the microphone.

Every stage has taught me something.

Some have taught me confidence.

Others have taught me humility.

Some reminded me to prepare better.

Others reminded me that one missed note doesn’t define an entire performance.

Each performance has made me a little stronger, a little wiser, and a little more grateful that I didn’t let fear keep me from walking onto the stage.

To every student preparing for an audition…

To every musician waiting behind the curtain…

To every teacher wondering if they’re enough…

Keep walking.

Not because you’re fearless…

But because your voice deserves to be heard more than your fears deserve to be believed.

🎻✨ Series Two: Preserving a Living Tradition

Mariachi has never been preserved by museums alone.

It has been preserved in rehearsal halls, classrooms, living rooms, family gatherings, and every teacher who chose to pass one more song, one more story, and one more piece of their heart to the next generation.

Every time we teach a student how to hold an instrument, explain the meaning behind a canción, or share the history of those who came before us, we become part of something much larger than ourselves.

We become another link in a chain that stretches across generations.

Traditions don’t survive because they are old.

They survive because someone cares enough to carry them forward.

To every educator, mentor, parent, musician, historian, and student who continues this beautiful journey…

🪉 A tiny Wednesday detour… because every day is a good day to learn something new about the harp!

Did you know that not all harp strings are the same color?

Those colorful strings aren’t just beautiful—they’re called guiding strings, and they’re one of the ways harpists learn to navigate the instrument. Think of them like landmarks on a map. 🗺️

One of the things I love most about the harp is that every instrument has its own personality, history, and little quirks. Even something as simple as the color of the guiding strings can vary from one harp to another!

A special thank you to my harp son, José Pelayo, for collaborating with me on this week’s Harp Tip Tuesday. 🪉💚 From France to San Antonio, it’s a reminder that our mariachi community stays connected no matter the distance.

🎶 Music is so much more than notes on a page. 🎶

Every rehearsal, every lesson, every performance is shaping far more than musicians.

Music strengthens the brain, develops language skills, builds confidence, fosters collaboration, and creates a sense of identity and belonging. For many students—especially those learning in bilingual and multicultural environments—music becomes another language through which they can discover themselves and connect with others.

As educators, parents, and advocates, we are not simply teaching songs.

🎻 What does it really mean to become a mariachi musician?

Learning an instrument is only the beginning.

A well-rounded mariachi musician doesn’t just memorize music—they understand the culture, apply what they’ve learned, analyze performances, reflect on their growth, and eventually contribute back to the tradition.

Bloom’s Taxonomy offers a beautiful reminder that every rehearsal can develop more than technical skills. It can cultivate curiosity, confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for mariachi.
