The genius and his feminine side. Nikola Tesla.

It's weird. At first sight, it doesn’t look like the chart of a scientific genius.

Venus is so overwhelmingly dominant! She is angular, conjunct the Sun, and she rules over his Ascendant and Moon.

The Moon also plays a big role in this Cancer heavy chart.

If I didn’t know it was Nikola Tesla, I would have got sidetracked and interpreted the fuss as revolving around feminine values: receptivity, feelings, relationships, unions, family…

Of course, with all the squares between Sun and Moon, Venus and Mars etc. we could expect difficult entanglements and painful clashes.

Nikola Tesla remained a bachelor for his entire life. He didn’t spend his energy and time trying to sort out his relationship with women. He kept himself out of the game.

He had beautiful blue eyes and dark hair, good looks, refined tastes and manners like a true Venusian.

He loved his mother who inspired him a lot, he had three sisters he loved dearly. He held women in high esteem.

His first, and likely only great love, was a forbidden one: he fell for a cousin, Malica Mandić. And then he remained a bachelor for the rest of his life.

He married science. In his later years, he had a great love story with a white pigeon, which he loved, in his own terms, “as a man loves a woman”...

Now, where is the genius inventor in the chart?

The first planet we would expect to show up is Uranus. At first sight, Nikola Tesla’s Uranus doesn’t look prominent at all. It’s in the first house, yes, but it’s not that exceptional.

That’s really weird. Uranus is the planet of genius, it rules inventions and electricity. Tesla was the genius who opened the way to electrify the 20th century. Alternating current, induction motor, radio waves, you name it.

We should have learned his name at school before those of Edison or Marconi.

When he was born there was an auspicious bolt of lightning. Nobody illustrates the energy of Uranus better than Nikola Tesla.

Of all planets, Uranus should be the most prominently placed. So wtf?

Now, beware, there is an exact half square with Jupiter. So Jupiter is electrified so to speak.

There is also a bi-quintile between Uranus and Mars. Orb: one degree. It’s tight enough. Hurrah for the 5th harmonic, a key word is ‘creative genius’!

Mars is a very strong player, it’s a personal planet with many connections. And it rules the North Node.

Mars receives Uranus energy through both the biquintile and as the dispositor of electrified Jupiter.

Still, I would have wanted a more obvious emphasis on Uranus. But I’m not the Great Spirit, only a small astrologer trying to figure things out.

Maybe quintiles should be taken more seriously? Especially when a chart is dominated by Venus, who is linked with the number five by the five petals flower its orbit draws?... It seems to be the case.

And there is also a septile between Uranus and Venus. Harmonics played a role in Tesla’s discoveries… Charts reflect more than we think.

Back to Jupiter. A thing not to be missed is its opposition with Black Moon Lilith. This spurs it on and makes it an important player from the evolutionary standpoint.

Jupiter is also connected with Venus and the Moon through opposition and square, with rather wide orbs, but well… it’s there.

And you know, Venus is all about relationships, and…

Equations are two terms bound by a relationship.

Tesla worked with alternating current running in coiled copper wires to generate magnetic fields. Venus likes magnetic fields. She is one herself. And she rules copper.

Matching frequencies brings about resonance. Venus does that all the time. Tesla did it with electro magnetism.

Libra is an Air sign: an archetypal character could be… a beautiful girl with brains. Big round glasses, a ponytail and a big book. Here it’s a man, but archetypes don’t mind.

We can also think that a fifty hertz alternating current changes direction fifty times per second, like a Libra girl stuck half way between a shoe and a cloth shop. (Sorry!)

As for the Moon, besides emotions, she rules memory - Nikola’s was phenomenal - and imagination, which is the power of creating mental images. Nikola’s ability to visualise was equally phenomenal. He didn’t need to draw plans on paper. The Moon supports the mind.

So ... Jupiter semi-squares Uranus, Uranus bi-quintiles Mars, Venus rules Uranus and Mars, Mars rules Jupiter, Venus squares Mars… The Sun is with Venus, the Moon is with Mars. What a circuit! Switch it on and get a bolt of lightning. Uranus definitely powers it.

There is another way to understand this chart. It is to take it at face value, and change the way we think about Nikola Tesla. He was an artist and that’s all.

There would be more to say. But like jokes, interest in charts may get killed by too many explanations. Don’t tell me I have forgotten this or that, as if I didn’t see what I haven’t talked about, and don’t hesitate to tell me what you see in the comments! Or ask questions, even if you’re a complete beginner, it’s fine.

I was reading someone's chart with Scorpio Rising and a couple of planets around the Ascendant. We were talking about, guess what, how difficult it is to trust.

The fear of betrayal is often a central issue for Scorpio.

I say 'often' because energies are like knives and we are like awkward beginners. But you'll always come across individuals who manage to handle the energies without cutting themselves.

This person had been betrayed before, so trusting had become even more of an issue. However, beside the Scorpio, there were also a few indicators of a, on principle, very perceptive, very intuitive personality.

The conversation led to her remembering that she saw the red flags, but chose to ignore them, as we do when we prefer to believe we have found love than stare at reality right in the eyes.

It's not possible to deceive someone who can see, unless they decide to deceive themselves.

Apache warriors had to be strong enough to see water in the desert, and remain hidden in spite of burning thirst for as long as it takes to make sure no enemy is waiting in ambush.

A mentally disturbed criminal: Lucien Léger.

On the 26th of May 1964, he kidnapped a 11 year old boy and asked for a ransom. He was not taken seriously as the boy didn’t belong to a rich family. On the 27th, he sent a written note to the press, telling he had strangled the child at 3am and that he would do it again. He signed his note “The strangler”.

The body was found near Verrières le Buisson. There had been no sexual violence.

He would keep sending letters to the police or the press. He said the funerals of the boy were perfect, that he was there and would assist the next ones if future ransoms wouldn’t be paid. He threatened to do all kinds of things, but didn’t. Police and psychiatrists thought that he was actually more interested in being talked about than anything else.

He made a mistake: he declared to the police his car had been stolen. Then the press received a message from The Strangler, telling he had used the stolen car to move a body. One week later, Lucien Leger said he found his car again, with human blood in it. The police found his behaviour strange, searched his place and found his writings, titled “Journal of a murderer”.

He was arrested and admitted the murder of the boy. He said he didn’t know why he did it.

He was working as a nurse in a psychiatric hospital at the time and was considered the ideal nurse. He had been unsuccessfully trying to publish some poetry previously, and was bitter about it.

Technical Stuff:
Once more we can see the importance of the karmic indicators: the nodes, their rulers, planets in aspects to them and of course Black Moon Lilith.

Chiron is conjunct the South Node and the Ascendant. Conjunctions to angles, as I always repeat, deserve to be noticed before anything else. Conjunction to nodes are also worth special attention.

With Chiron, we may get the healer, but we may get the unhealed wounded, the archetype states that we get both in the same package.

Neptune is exactly squaring the nodes. This alone doesn’t make a person mentally disturbed for sure, but there is something that may go that way. Neptune, by the same token, squares also this prominent Chiron and the Ascendant.

Jupiter, ruler of the North Node, is opposed by Pluto. So Pluto is on the horizon - metaphorically speaking.

What struck me at first sight was the conjunction of the Moon with Black Moon Lilith. Furthermore, it’s in Scorpio. Both Lilith and Scorpio can be quite extreme, especially in the context of the other indicators I’ve just mentioned.

Also, this is an unaspected Moon, if you define unaspected by “no major aspect to any personal planets”. There is a wild card side to unaspected planets.

Pluto in Cancer and the Moon in Scorpio are in mutual reception.

Mutual receptions have a good reputation, but when two highwaymen get involved in a fruitful partnership, the result is rarely a philanthropic organisation. Add Lilith to this mix…

Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio. It is also afflicted by Black Moon Lilith for having her in his domicile.

Mars also rules over the Aries Sun, which makes it even more powerful. Mars is ruled by Jupiter, and Jupiter is opposed by Pluto.

I have not said everything there is to notice, but to me these are the main avenues - already a web of difficult challenges.

Now, we know that he strangled the boy, according to his own letter to the press, at 3am on the 27th of May 1964, in Verriere le Buisson, France. It’s worth looking at both the event chart and at the transits on the natal chart.

It was a Full Moon night. The Moon was about to oppose the Sun at exactly 5 degrees of Sagittarius, bang on Lucien Leger natal Mars.

At the moment of the crime, the transiting Moon was conjunct transiting Black Moon Lilith, at 13 degree Sagittarius.

Aries was Rising.

Neptune was transiting over the natal Moon, and Mars was transiting in opposition to it.

Transiting Chiron was opposing Neptune.

If astrology was not real, these charts would be two incredibly amazing coincidences.

The first one is an event chart. At 11h18am on the 1st of September 1859, from his domicile in Redhill, England, amateur astronomer Richard Carrington observed solar flares bursting out of sunspots.

What is remembered as ‘The Carrington event’ was the most intense geomagnetic storm ever recorded on earth.

What could best symbolise solar flares than Mars in Leo?

It dominates the chart: it is tightly conjunct with the MC, and it is chart ruler as Scorpio is rising.

Over one week, all over the world, the skies lit up glowing red. Some people believed the end of the world had arrived. It was possible to read a newspaper at midnight. Northern lights were seen as far South as Columbia…

There weren’t electrical devices all over the world in 1859. There were the cables of the telegraph. Pylons threw sparks. Operators received electric shocks. Many lines got fried out of service. It would take weeks to get the network back to normal.

You’ve noticed Uranus squaring the Sun, and you know the Sun rules Mars when Mars is in Leo.

Carrington left his name to the event because he was the first one to theorise the link between solar activity and auroras in our skies.

As usual, when I come across a very meaningful moment, I check the previous eclipse… which happened just a few days before, on the 28th of August.

Reports mention that extraordinary solar activity had started… on the 28th of August. That’s why Carrington had had his eye on the telescope, watching and drawing sunspots.

If astrology is not real, coincidences are amazing. If you take the chart of the eclipse from Redhill - the place in Great Britain from which Richard Carrington was observing… The eclipse, when exact, is conjunct with the Ascendant to the degree. It was important all over the world, but especially there.

Mercury in Virgo is conjunct with the eclipse and Uranus squares it. Eye on the telescope, scrutinising.

Later, telegraph operators get electric shocks…

There is more to observe in these charts, and in other charts as well, in particular the other eclipses of this same eclipse season, and Carrington’s natal one. Feel free to comment.

A geomagnetic storm of this amplitude could happen again at any time.

However, not to worry too much, there is a delay between the occurrence of solar flares and the complete disruption or destruction of anything electrical on earth. We should have time to shut down the grid before it’s all fried. After a few days of blackout, power could be restored.

Still, imagine. Water stops flowing from the tap because the pumps are off. You can’t recharge your phone. The Internet is down. You can’t flush your toilets. The government is useless.

Even for a few days, could you cope?

I became aware of the Carrington event watching a video by a survivalist marketing his skills.

I wish the current Pluto-Neptune-Uranus famous current configuration, amplified by Jupiter very soon, brings what is most needed for our survival: a psychic revolution.

If I didn't know I was a Scorpio (by my Sun), a Libra (by my Moon) and a Cancer (by my Rising) you could easily make me believe I am an Aquarius.
Well, that's my South Node.

In 1934, Norma Jeane Mortenson was not called Marylin yet. She was seven years old. In January, she witnessed her mother having a nervous breakdown.

She saw her flailing and screaming until the police arrived.

It was an extreme moment and a turning point. Her mother would be diagnosed with schizophrenia. From then on, after being taken care of for a while by a friend of her mother, Norma Jeane would live in orphanages or with various foster families.

I couldn’t find a more precise date than January 1934 in biographies.

Almost every time I study a biography and there is one of these moments that change everything, I find eclipses winking in very meaningful ways.

Astrologically, in the night of the 30th to 31st of January there was a partial lunar eclipse which was opening the eclipse season.

NB: The position of the Moon on this chart is that of the 31st of January 12am. (Night of the 30th to the 31st) On average, the Moon moves at the speed of one degree every two hours.

A few observations:

First thing: The Sun-Moon opposition was happening just a few degrees from Marylin’s natal Ascendant-Descendant axis. (A lunar eclipse is happening when the moon is full)

Second thing: Transiting Saturn was conjunct with the transiting Sun, and less than two degrees from perfecting a conjunction with her natal Moon.

Second thing and a half: transits are moments of manifestation of what’s present in the natal chart: Marylin’s natal Moon is opposed by Neptune and squared by Saturn, that’s highly challenging.

Second thing and three quarters: a transiting planet brings the energy of its natal placement. Natal Saturn is in the 4th house, in Scorpio, part of the T-square that involves the Moon, and, last but not least, ruler of her South Node in Capricorn.

Third thing: transiting Venus and Mercury were also conjunct with this transiting Saturn on her natal Moon. The quick planets in transits are triggers, the slow planets mean the strong impact. That’s a lot on Saturn.

Fourth thing transiting Mars was on her natal Jupiter.

Since Norma Jeane was two weeks old and until 1933 (5 years old) she had been in the care of a strict and religious foster family: Ida and Wayne Bolender. Her mother was visiting her.

Beyond the time of this crisis, it’s safe to interpret Saturn as meaning restrictions, deprivations and abuse rather than a structuring environment.

(Beware, when looking at the chart, that the symbols of the planets are not placed exactly in alignment with the mark on the exact degree of their position, as it would result in a confusing superimposition. Check the degrees, that’s quite a meeting.)

This eclipse definitely played its role of meaning the end of a chapter and the beginning of what comes next.

And it was only the beginning of the eclipse season…

In opposition to the demanding, sharp and chiselling energy of Black Moon Lilith, Priapus unleashes the energies of nature in their raw state.

Astronomically, Priapus is the lunar perigee. Priapus is where the Moon is closest to earth, and moving at the highest speed.

Mythologically, Priapus was a minor deity with a huge p***s in a state of constant er****on. Priapism is the name of the corresponding medical condition.

Son of Dionysus and Aphrodite (according to some versions) he was a God of Fertility, livestock and gardens. He was close to Pan and the satyrs.

Black Moon Lilith is rebellious feminine energy. Her motto could be:

‘Not like that!’

Priapus was cursed by Hera. In spite of his constant er****on, when the time was right to make something out of it, he was impotent. I associate this particular aspect of Priapus myth to the opposition of Black Moon Lilith.

Black Moon Lilith is said to be ambiguous or paradoxical.

‘Not like that!’ means both yes and no at the same time. When it’s only an energy, and not understood, it feels like a double bind.

Thinking of how a rustic creature like Priapus may behave, wanting to bridle the energy is quite understandable.

Black Moon Lilith is sometimes said to be ‘castrating’. Astronomically, she is the void, the direction the Moon moves away.

Symbolically, these two opposite extremes apply to all the energies they may touch.

Literal sexuality is only the ground level of interpretation.

When Saturn is conjunct with Priapus for instance, we can imagine Saturn doing Saturn like crazy. The outcome is a control freak or a compulsive builder of structures.

Like the nodes, Priapus and Black Moon Lilith are an axis.

Black Moon Lilith in opposition will bombard Saturn with ‘Not like that’ injunctions.

This may manifest as blame and shame, rejection and challenge. As an inner voice, or as a partner taking on the role, Black Moon Lilith will insist on Saturn’s lack of flexibility and possibly block it altogether.

As human beings, our challenge is to understand what’s going on and find balance.

We usually don’t forget that the nodes are an axis, and interpret the journey from the South Node towards the North Node as the path of evolution.

We should also remember that Black Moon Lilith and Priapus are also an axis of great importance in evolutionary astrology.

The most difficult chart I've ever seen.
What would you say, if you saw this chart without knowing it’s Saint Charles de Foucauld? He was born on the 15th of September 1858, at 5pm in Strasbourg (France).

He was called ‘Marabout’ (Holy Man) by the Tuaregs, even though they were Muslims and he was Christian. Not a single one converted though. They had their faith. He didn’t think of himself as a missionary. He wanted the ‘last place’. He wanted to be poor amongst the poor, to follow in the steps of Jesus of Nazareth, and abandon himself completely to God.

If I didn’t know whose chart that was, I would think… Someone in a psychiatric hospital maybe?

Two grand crosses, if you include aspects with Chiron. No sextiles, no trines, unless you include Chiron. Only tensions. Neptune all over the place, Aquarius Rising with Uranus unaspected and Venus ringing the bells of heartache.

When he was five, his mother died of a misscarriage. (It was the 13th of March 1864). A few months later, his father died of tuberculosis. The father had mental health issues. The mother may have died of exhaustion actually.

The same year, Clothilde de Foucauld, his grandmother, who had taken him and his little sister Marie with her, died in front of them. She was anxious that a herd of cows would trample on the children. It upset her so much that her heart failed.

He and his sister would then live with his maternal grandfather. He was warm and loving. He would die when Charles was 20 years old. He left him a tremendous fortune. At the time, Charles was attending a military school to become a cavalry officer.

He was obese. He was called Fatty Foucauld. He was said to have absolutely no sense of duty, no discipline. He organised huge parties, champagne, foie gras and so on.

He spent so much that his aunt obtained judicial control of his finances. And, what a scandal, he had a mistress, a woman of low birth and ill repute, an actress and courtesan, ‘Mimi’. He was called a libertine. I’m pretty sure his reputation went far beyond what he was actually doing.

He would stay two years with Mimi. When he was sent to Algier, he took her with him. He tried to pass her off as his legitimate spouse in receptions. The scandal was huge. The social elite of the 19th century was not ready for rock and roll. His superiors ordered him to send her back to France. He refused. He was suspended.

Back to France with Mimi, he learned that his regiment was sent to fight in Tunisia. He wouldn’t let his comrades face danger and stay behind. He left Mimi and went to fight. He proved himself to be a good soldier after all.

With Venus in Scorpio, opposite Pluto, square Saturn and Chiron I wouldn’t expect him to find it easy to get girls and easy to let them go.

When grief has nested in your heart, parting is painful.

He would resign from the army the next year, learn Hebrew and Arabic and explore Morocco disguised as a rabbi. He would have been executed as a spy if he had been identified as French. He would take notes in a tiny book hidden in the palm of his hand, record ethnologic observations and chart the territory.

He would get a gold medal from the French Geographical Society for this work. Sagittarius and Virgo working well together here!
After this, was it love that he was feeling? Or needing to find an anchor? She was called Marie Titre. He met her in Algiers. Her father was a French army officer and a geographer. He seriously considered marrying her, but… Charles’ family was dead set against it. He was a Vicomte, and she had no title of nobility.

Under pressure he renounced…

Later, he would write to his cousin, Marie de Bondy:
‘I needed to be saved from this marriage, and you saved me’.
Since his teenage years, Charles had declared himself an agnostic. When exploring Morocco, the deep faith and contentment with life of the people he met struck him.

He came to utter a strange prayer. “My God, if You exist, make Yourself known to me.”

The 30th of October 1886 is the (most probable) date of his dramatic conversion, provoked by his encounter with a charismatic priest.

From then on, this tormented man had found a radical path to match the radical demands of his radical chart….
There would be much more to tell, but not now. I was wondering about his life story ‘before’ he became a monk and a priest living in the desert.

He died on the 16th of November 1916 killed by rebels in Tamanrasset, Algeria.

He is remembered as a saint, but he could also be remembered as a fantastic linguist. He translated thousands of Tuareg poems and produced a massive Tuareg-French dictionary.

He was quite ahead of his time: he valued the culture of the people he met, and the people themselves, instead of trying to impose, with a colonial and missionary mindset typical of his days, his own culture and beliefs.

In Aquarius style, he wanted everyone—Christians, Muslims, Jews, and others—to regard him as “their brother, the universal brother”.
The last words are for Neptune, from the heart of an orphan, his ‘prayer of abandonment’:

Father,
I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do,
I thank you.
I am ready for all, I accept all...
