When we start to look at aging as a disease, we can start to ask what the cause of aging is. And, guess what?
We actually have some answers beyond just getting old. There are a lot of different functions within your body that contribute to aging, and I’ll be breaking down a lot of these functions in my emails leading up to the Longevity Roadmap docu-series. I’ll be starting with a topic that sounds pretty frightening: zombies. Well actually, zombie cells to be more precise.
Zombie cells, more formally known as senescent cells, are basically what they sound like. They are cells inside your body that have lost function and have effectively ‘died’ but have not been cleared out from your body like normal cells are at the end of their lifecycle. The problem here is that senescent cells are quite rude—they create and spread inflammation. In fact, they create more zombie cells, which creates more inflammation.
As you get older, these senescent cells start to accumulate creating more and more inflammation. If you look at all of the most prevalent chronic diseases, they are all created or exacerbated by inflammation. So you can see why this is such an important issue—more zombie cells mean more inflammation and more chronic disease.
This can also lead you to experience organ dysfunction, which creates more senescent cells, and the cycle continues. This is aging. In fact, the more zombie cells you collect, the quicker you age.
As with most things, there is an important caveat: having some amount of senescent cells is beneficial and has been shown to be protective against cancer. However, there are lifestyle factors that play into the over-accumulation of senescent cells—that’s where we run into trouble. Especially because many of these lifestyle factors themselves create inflammation.
I dive into the topic of functional medicine and it’s approach to achieving optimal health and longevity in my latest docu-series, Longevity Roadmap alongside my colleagues at The UltraWellness Center.
