🇬🇧 Boat Balance ⛵
A boat's balance is essential and depends, among other things, on proper sail trim.
Because the headsail's centre of effort is positioned forward of the boat's centre of lateral resistance, it tends to make the boat bear away. Conversely, the mainsail's centre of effort is positioned aft of the centre of lateral resistance, so it tends to make the boat head up.
When both sails are correctly balanced, the helm is close to neutral.
➡️ If the mainsail is not sheeted in enough, the boat tends to bear away, resulting in lee helm.
➡️ If the mainsail is oversheeted, the boat tends to head up, the helm becomes heavy, and the boat develops weather helm.
The goal is to achieve a slight weather helm, close to neutral. Excessive helm angle creates drag and slows the boat down.
This effect is particularly noticeable on upwind points of sail, where the balance between the headsail and the mainsail has the greatest influence on the boat's behaviour.
